Exhaust is all done now :)

Sounds pretty good too :D A lot quieter than I was expecting, which is nice. Have to see what it's like under proper load though. No vid for a while all the intake piping is apart and won't be back together for a while.

It has a slight leak somewhere near the front on the pass side. I really hope it isn't a crack in the extractor as that will be a MAJOR PITA to fix as it has to come off, and to get that off the engine has to be dropped and the sump removed

Now that the exhaust isn't 1million decibels I can actually hear the motor run. It has a bit of a tick, hopefully just from the lifters. And I'm now getting a knock sensor fault (along with the usual auto box fault). I put in new knock sensors before the engine went in, might be a wiring problem, have to sort it later.

No piccies either, Photodump is being stupid again.

    Oks :)

I'm going to redo the rear half of the exhaust, I'm not happy how low it sits around the diff area, should be able to pull it up nearly 50mm, and the pass side muffler is pointing down too much. I don't know quite how I made it so low  Shouldn't be too hard, just fiddly.

The intake is mostly sorted now. Got the pod in the pass side SMIC position still. 3" silicone 45d elbow through the 'cooler pipe hole, into some 3" ally tube bend cut at approx 45deg (was a 180deg I got from supercrap dirt cheap), after that into about 150mm of straight 3" silicone and then into the AFM. Just need 3.5" tube to go from the elbow off the throttle to the AFM and weld some pipes into it for the PCV and IACV.

Been doing more fiddly wiring and making it all nice and tidy. I'm covering all the wires in that split tubing and heat shrinking everything to make it look nice and neat. Accusump is all wired up along with the side indicators and the FPR only needs two screws into the firewall and that's done. Still got to do all the HID's, but that's easy enough.

Will try and organise the mod plate guy for later this week too.

Still got to play with the bonnet, but that can wait, that will be the last major hurdle I think. Might get some ply today and cut that up to make the template for the ally.

For a uni bum he gets stuff done though... I've been at uni 7 years now, and still haven't done a quarter of the stuff he has. Although having a kickass shed such as chrispy probably helps a little :D

Hehe, the kickarse shed definitely helps!

Went to the exhaust shop to get some 3.5" pipe today. Guy told me that they don't use that size pipe for exhaust, goes from 3" to 4" But they did have a 3.5" exhaust tip :D So I got that instead lol! Ingenuity!

Went to 5 car part shops looking for a screw in nipple for a vac line, I don't know why it's so friggen hard to stock something simple and common. Got it from the smallest grimiest speed shop I know :p

Also got some stainless tube from the local hardware for the IACV and PCV pipeing, much nicer than the mild steel I was going to use.

I was going to weld it all up tonight, but my best mate has a birthday today or something. Bastard.

I bodged up my carbon cannister with a POPE brand elbow piece for a garden sprinkler system (just for emissions;) ) There is a lot of small and large sprinkler fittings and hoses that can be inexpensively and easily modified to suit something such as vacuum. being a hard plastic, its easy to file, melt/bend and tap a thread on enough to get the job done. Most of the fittings have a sharp barb, and a threaded section for screwing into plastic.

***Warning, only for the serious bodgy bogan auto tuners *** :D

Half my PCV system is irrigation fittings :p Appear to be identical to the stuff they sell at Repco and a 1/5th the price :D

I just like the part where he is constantly able to afford buying all this stuff...not knowing the history, but i can only assume he has a pretty sweet job...

Those pope fittings do look the same as the type i used for the heater system in the Dato...came from Autopro too...

If it works it works i guess.

Also a mates Bday is a lame excuse Chrispy. :p

Bahaha, I haven't worked in 6 months :p I had a pretty sweet job, quit to go finish my degree...

    Some piccies...

I'm using image shack until Photodump is working again

Pickled the welds on the exhaust. This is a horrible, horrible mix of acids that passivates the welds so they don't rust. Overkill, but if it's worth doing... :p

This is the goo, covered in warnings, and a big label saying only allowed to be acquired by autorised persons. No idea how they let me buy it :D Just got it from the local BOC Gas and Gear. About $25 or so.

Make sure you use proper protective equipment with this stuff, and I'm not just joking around with this. Glasses, rubber chemical gloves, long sleeves etc. The active ingredients are Fluric acid which will seep through your skin and give you a heart attack and kill your nerves, and Nitric acid which they use in explosives. So yeah. Carefulness.

This is the weld before pickling.

And this is after. You just brush on the goo pretty thick, then wait half an hour or so and hose it off and you're done. You should wire bursh the welds before hand too.

And all done. You can see how the pass side muffler sort of sits at a bit of a strange angle.

Must have been a hell of a job for you to have the coin in the bank to achieve such challenges...

Makes me wonder if i should ditch work and finish my studies....not likely now im building a house...oh well.

    Anyways.

How do you go about polishing the pipes now that you've treated them? Running a cut and polish compound over the welds will not upset the pickled effect?

Strange you describe it as pickling though. Pickling to me suggests its etching small pores into the surface.....hrm, but i guess that's correct as it then applies a 'coating' of chemical 'x' ?

So again would chemical 'x' be affected by a cut/polish compound....

    -man i write riddles sometimes.

I was working as a Contracts Engineer for a Swedish pump company. Project management, design, estimating, commissioning and that sort of stuff. Money was good, free time and stress not so good. Taught me lots of useful things though. Like about pickling :D

Pickling sort of removes any contamination and scale from the metal, then it allows the normal chrome oxide layer to form over the top. I suppose you could call it a form of chemical polishing. If you polish the pipe it has the same effect and allow the oxide to form.

Your just one smart cookie aint you.

Job sounds fairly full on, hence your lack of spare time comment. :p

Either way, more solid work. Did you actually end up improving the passenger side exhaust compared to the earlier pics where you weren't happy with the angle. Or was it only a marginal improvement...

Heh, come to think of it, OCD in respects to being a perfectionist there chrispy.

Will have to get some more movie clips of it now running with the full exhaust and better idle.

  20. Chrispy

    Chrispy Pretentious Upstart

Nah, haven't touched the exhaust yet. I'm just about to go and do the intake though :D

Haha, I'm far from the perfectionist... If the exhaust flanges at the back weren't hanging down so low I wouldn't bother changing it. There's only 80mm clearance at the moment and I want to drop the car another 20mm or so.
