squidward has has moral insight that most can only dream of. I recently ticked off the last few tidbits to get the ball rolling on my engine build. all the parts (including block) are going to the builder today. i sent my brand new Wiseco pistons back and exchanged them for a set of 87.5mm JE pistons. something something silicone content something something piston to bore clearances something something more power. and JE are apparently the bomb! While I was at it I also sent back my head studs and picked up a set of L19s go hard or go home right? gotta be ready if I ever convert to corn juice overnight parts from japan came (stylishly packaged too) no valve lift for me. these were actually very competitively priced at ~$400 landed. and of course, to match the new upgraded valve springs... BDE remanufactured series 1 cam gears. non adjustable because there's sweet **** all power gain in adjustable intake cam gears and they're dear as hell. I came across a cheap second hand set of slide gears for the exhaust I'd nab them. felt really good to pick up all the new parts all over the place, load them into the boot of the daily and get the ball rolling on a motor. i want to drive my bitchin' car! -A
JE are usually a low silicon piston (like ACL and arias for example), although you can special order high silicon alloy. Your lower silicone piston is actually softer, but not as brittle and more resistant to detonation. Needs a bigger gap as they expand more, gonna be slappy on cold start. Higher silicone content usually tighter clearances, less noise on cold start and less blowby, longer lifecycle but also more brittle and generally not as "hardy" in extreme applications. Do you know what size wrist pin they take? Are they notched for oil squirters?
That's interesting, I was under the impression they ran a tighter clearance than higher silicone pistons. No and no, sorry. With this stuff that's out of my boundaries I am simply taking the advice of those opinions I trust. If you've been there and done that I'm interested; if it's written by some 14 year old online I just don't care... you know how it is.
Got it the wrong way 'round -good article here http://www.importtuner.com/tech/impp_1110_piston_anatomy_tech_knowledge/ although being from an auto mag it could have been written by a 20yr old journalism student so I suppose accuracy is questionable. I'm also sorta curious (being in the market for pistons) why builder suggested JE over wiseco as it seems that both JE and wiseco use the same 2618 alloy -according to the manufacturer at least (assuming the z32,wisecos are from the sport compact range). Is there something in the piston design that is supposed to be better?
Everyone "in the know" that I've spoken to about my new engine has scoffed at the mention of Wiseco. I'll find out some more info and get back to you.
in your research what took CP out of the picture? I like CP as they are Beefier and also offer the extra thick rist pins aswell. though I am building nitrous motor so apples and oranges.
For me? Assuming so due to quote -CP not ruled out I agree they're a great piston just curious in difference re JE & wiseco as it's certainly not silicon content of the alloy. Funny thing too wiseco have been making JE since about 1999. Thick wrist pin and better oiling system is what puts CP in front where I'm concerned...
thick wrist pin is the factor for me. I have personally seen fine CP pistons but the standard wrist pins were bent the 1600hp upgrade pins look the goods.
Have you guys seen this piston comparison? Doesn't touch on JE unfortunately but good write up on CP & Wiseco. clicky Also a good write up on connecting rods too, clicky
this is just one of those things where I'm happy to say I don't know enough to make the best decision so I'm listening to those that do. and not just people on the internet that say that haha more news coming. been putting in some good hours with the mig/angle grinder recently, and some other work as well. some cool parts are also on their way to me from the land of the rising sun. that'll have to slow down a bit though as I need to pay for my engine machining/assembly. -A
Agree I talk to the people who go fast and not the people hanging around saying they go fast. Proof is in the pudding for me. You never know it all.
couldn't agree more and when you're done get a second opinion, because even if the experienced people HAVE done it before they can for various reasons through no fault of their own still be incorrect
nissan got it right I have little to no justification for these purchases they cost so much money but they're pretty cool optional late model roof racks + carpet mat. I haven't seen any of these for sale... well ever, so I pounced when it came up. i want to use these for actually carrying things (like a canoe or a coffin or some shit) and not to just be some snap back wearing poof. the racks came with all the OEM fitting hardware and ski holders too. the brackets are a little weathered but they'll turn up nicely with some powder coat. i heard you like boot mats, so we put a boot mat on your boot mat so you can protect your carpet with your carpet have some fun plans for this one rare oem goodness a few of those things that are just nice to have. -A
well it's official, my high flows are sold. and I never even drove them beyond wastegate pressure. next step: pair of gt2860rs, prime speed 3" v-band dumps and big 3" air inlets too. got some fun (read: extreme) plans for the manifold too, keen to see how that plays out -A
