Sooo, today a little something rocked up :D

Long story short I nearly ate shit from my sloppy stockie after trying to grab 4th at 160kp/h and ended up in 2nd. Made my mind up i need to fix that problem.

Searched for a bit on ebay and picked up a cheap short throw shifter, overall not much more than a set of nissan shifter bushing delivered.

Thought id do a bit of a how to on installing a short throw shifter.

    Tools you will need:
    Phillips head screw driver
    12mm closed end spanner
    12,13,14mm sockets
    socket extenders
and with anything zed related, a big steaming shitload of patience.

Start by removing the head-unit surround and center console. There is 7 Phillips head screws you need to remove in order to do that.

Leaving all this staring at you:

Proceed to remove the nut holding the dust boots in place
    [IMG]

Then remove the shifter support bracket, using a 12mm socket.

Then remove the two nuts holding the shifter down, these can tend to be a pain in the ass as space is limited

Then remove the nut and bolt holding the shifter and the leaver on the gearbox. Again fiddly p.i.t.a
    [IMG]

    shifter out
    [IMG]

    comparison shot of the two
    [IMG]

The reason behind my sloppy shifting, whats left of the bushing...

Before you put in the new shifter, you need to fit the sleeve (shown in previous photo) into the bottom. As my short shifter is a cheap and nasty trying to get the sleeve into the bushings was a task as the hole was too small

After that you can begin to process of putting in the new shifter, pretty simple, just reverse the removal process ;)

    new one in :D

Whole process took about 2 hours, with no instructions what so ever. so hopefully this helps somebody and turns it into a 1 hour job ;)

Review so far is great!! would recommend this to anybody, the shift pattern feels like its so tight and precise its off a f40!

If anything is unclear, just ask ;)

dont throw your oem shifter, sell it to me :D
probably not going to help my chances of getting it, but installed an ebay short shifter in my TT, and its a POS. Shifts bewdifully, for the first 10min, then painfully tight. Curse the day I changed it

Been a long time between updates!!

Progress has been slow, basically because i have no job. And the fact that im trying to gather some cash to move again doesnt help.

The few things i have done to it since have been minimal. But, it keeps the interest stream flowing.

I have installed a 2 way car alarm/immobiliser system, true to the nature of this build it was all done by me.

Currently changing most of the globes inside the car to super white LED's, and what the following write up we be about.

Yesterday I got a roll of imitation carbon fibre wrap from ebay, and went straight at it. And before i get to far into it, I know some people my call this a rice mod but i couldn't give a rats :p

I did a little bit of research as to how i should go about applying the stuff, and basically just used some hot soapy water to get it in place and then kept putting it in the oven at about 90 deg to keep the wrap soft and malleable.

    I pulled out the cluster
    [IMG]

And dismantled it to a point where i could begin to make a stencil.

Then I cut out the wrap following the stencil. going by the rule of measure twice cut once!

Then covered the gauge surround in soapy water so i could slide the warp into position and then put it in the oven to make it soft. After that i started cutting and stretching.

After some time stretching the wrap around all the bends and holes i got it to look like this!

    Finally back together
    [IMG]

Im really happy with it, and so far it had stayed on. Even after i left the car out in 27 deg heat!

Hope this inspires some of you to do some d.i.y over the weekend :D

Also as I previously mentioned about saving some cash to move, That would be meaning im moving north again, so id just like to say a big thank you to the fellas that i did get to meet while i was down here! Had a blast cruising and fixing shit!

If you ever find your way up to Mildura dont be afraid to say hi! Hopefully some of you will make the journey to the riverland auto expo, meaning u will more than likely go through here on your way :p

That's a pretty nice job you have done on fixing it up.

Been looking for a couple of months for a NA Hardtop in Melbourne so I know what you mean by scraping the bottom of the barrel on carsales.

Shifter looks good, do yourself a favour and keep a pair of socks or at least 1 thick sock in the glovebox to put over the gearknob when the car is parked on a hot day. Your palms will thank you for it!
