Just did a plenum pull and iv dropped number 6.

So... here is what i have done and checked so far.

All coilpack connectors are new and were installed prior to plenum pull and working correctly.

All injector connector plugs were wired in to the correct places and functioning.

Coilpack 6 was switched with 2 to try isolate problem to the coilpack itself. Did not work. problem remained at 6.

ran a multimeter through coilpack connector 6 and 4 and injector connector 6 and 4 and they had sporadic readings but both similar.

    Here are the symptoms.

The car will sometimes run on 6 but as soon as i get to 3.5-4k revs it will drop back to 5 cyls with 6th being out. If i let it sit for 15 or so minutes it will sometimes go back to 6 cyls sometimes not. Had it cut out on me at the 3.5-4k rev mark twice.

Iv run out of time so tomorrow my plan is to check spark plugs. Can i pull the spark on 6 out and hook it up to the coilpack, then rest on plenum and look for a spark?

Failing this, i have no clue what to do next. Any NEW info is greatly appriciated.

    Matt.

Ok so my iPhone paused and rebooted itself. Loosing my post i first wrote.

    Short version is.

    What ptu are you using.

Yes you can remove the spark plug and had the base rest on an earth point to visually see ignition.

Remove green fuel relay from drivers foot kick panel though to stop te fuel pump from turning on when you crank the engine.

    Report back.

If in doubt test continuity from the points at the coilpacks connector back to the ecu plug. Same for injector points. This will rule out faulty wiring.

Check resistance of the injector. Ohms test. Oem margins are between 10 - 14. If faulty see my fs thread. Shameless plug :)

Let us know how it all goes matt.

Series 2 PTU that was in before the plenum Pull.

    Ill try the sparkplug tomorrow.

    thanks :)

What plugs are you using - and at what gaps and how much boost? When you up the boost you'll find that it'll 'blow the spark out' - most likely due to 20 year old coilpacks not quite having the same power they did. Most plugs come gapped to about 1.1mm - I've found about 0.9mm is fine (running up to 17psi)

Plugs shouldn't be a problem if he hasn't changed them. All he did was a plenum pull.

Pulled the spark plug out and turned it over. Its sparking pretty big so thats not the issue.

no idea what to check now.

    So bump! anyone?

    whats left.
    Either compression (mechanical) or injector
    You have eliminated spark.
Fuel pressure must be ok else the other cylinders wound not fire.
Any chance of a compression test or swap the injector.

    So have you checked fuel?
injector resistance (ohm test) as per the post above is a good start.
Follow that up with a sound test- screwdriver or mechanics stethoscope on the injector cap to listen for the tick of the operating injector.

You mentioned in chat that there was a big air leak. This might also be worth elaborating here in this thread, as it is worthy of further investigation.

Done this (bold). injector 6 is functioning like the rest.

big air leak was resolved, i had moved the balance tube gasket on driver side.

Ill speak to my old man about the ohm test.

    cheers,
    matt

You mentioned a loud ticking noise too? Located? Fixed?

holy hell john. I said i had to go for dinner. And whenever i leave and come back the chat is full, i literally have to spam it for 30 mins to get back on. Are you trying to talk to me when im not even in the chat? look up the top to see who is in the channel man.... geez

Also, waiting 15 mins would make it run on 6, thus solving it. But today those symptoms vanish and it no longer runs on 6 at all.

Replaced the spark plug in 6. Did a more thorough check on the injectors firing by putting a metal driver on the top hat to listen for the ticks. Sometimes it sounded ok sometimes it sounded different to others but im not sure....

I rang mark and he was a great help in sorting me through some steps as to what to do next.

So im looking at flow testing and cleaning the injectors as he said they might be a bit gummy from sitting on the shelves for a long period. Or replace my ECU to eliminate that. Though its hard as mine is socketed and chipped.....

i know youve cleaned the injector plugs but get some CLR it can be purchased at bunnings supercheap etc, get a seringe suck some up squirt it into the top of the injector plug let it sit for a couple of mins then clean it with contact cleaner. do this with the injector and injector plug. about a week ago mine would not run at all after a plenum pull i cleaned the connectors with contact cleaner they looked clean but they wherent the CLR eats oxidation and after i done this it started first go.

    cheers pauly

The injector connectors are brand new though?

mine where to i would atleast clean the injector with some CLR i was scratching my head for days and all it turned out to be was some corrosion

    Does CLR stand for Calcium/Lime/Rust?

Ill try get my mits on some and hit everything.

Hey Muci I have a problem with #6 as well, at similar revs even, although mine is oil relates in the sence when it dies I get oil smoke out the exhaust, so I was wondering if you get this as well.

Have many other people tried CLR with injectors? I would be very hesitant to use CLR on an injector, its a pretty good acid and may affect their performance pretty badly. I would stick to using solvents and ultrasound for cleaning them rather than a chemical cleanser but thats just me being cautious, it might be fine...

oil smoke ey? Well when im running on 5 cyls im dumping a lot of unburnt fuel out the back so yea ofcoarse its smokey.

and im doing all this alone so i cant really get a good idea of whats coming out then back when im the one on the peddle. :zlove:
