    Slight issue here....

I have an after market cluster that requires the use of a 12V inverter.

The inverter connects up to the cluster fine but it has 5 bare wires coming from the other end. Iv figured out what 4/5 do and i have no clue what the last does, im guessing ground?

The 2 top wires connect to Pos and Neg power supply. The other 2(brown and red) are for the dimmer and the last black wire which is in ribbon with the dimmers is the mystery one.

Here is a pic. Can anyone shed some light?

    Black nearly always = Earth.

    I've

used those type inverters for speedhut gauges, the spare black wire was an earth in my case, should be the same for you.

Any ideas where you can purchase this exact kind of inverter? (theres a chance this one is faulty)

Jaycar dont supply inverters (tried for altia scuff plates).

Do a search for "auto illusions" or "i-dials". They were the Australian manufacturer of them. Couldnt find anything too recent, and yellow pages doesnt bring them up. (possibly gone under). Might be able to find a web address or email contact on any of the multitude of forums they were selling their kits on.

Try a mock-up of them. Plug it all in and wire to battery, using red and black as + and -
Make sure the dials are plugged in first, inverters dont like being connected with no load. Try different combinations until you ascertain that the inverter is cactus or not, making sure blacks are always ground.

That, or hit up whitenight, the link you sent me had him mentioning that he has the kit working in his car.

Too tired to be of any more help.

    Sleep time now

    peace out :)

Lots of problems solved, lots more problems sigh.

Blew a fuse, had all sorts of other crazy problems that iv worked out by myself.

The last one i need to (i assume) that wiring in the dimmer will complete the circuit allowing the EL panel to illuminate (ultimate goal).

So where can i find a wiring diagram or a how to on wiring these 2 wires into my dimmer switch. Anyone got a link?

    Matt.

Dimmer switch is purely a potentiometer. Where it will have a Positive, Negative and the Hot wire. I from a far am guesstimating that there is a dedicated 12v circuit within to which you've found. That the other 3 are for connecting to the Pot. Black (-) Red (+) Brown (hot wire).

Hooking it into your factory Pot should be relatively straight forward.

Granted, if you take off the black plastic lid and show us the innards, we should be able to justify our guesstimations.

Not really, the factory pot has it's own timer module and works on buttons rather than your traditional type of pot.

Well that stuffs me up. Just drew out a nice Paint pics too.

If its buttons, same principle applies. Just need to look at the wiring diagram. If in doubt, just get a suitable 12V pot from Jaycar and rig it up somewhere.

Will need to inspect this button assembly to further aid you... Dont drive the zed daily so ive forgotten where it even sits on the consol. haha.
