What is it with these cars?? Beautiful to look at, fun to drive, hugely ego-boosting....then, overnight, just after a trouble-free, exhilarating drive (not high-speed), when you feel at peace with the world and your car, the thing starts next morning (today) with a tremendous 'clatter' in the front (passenger side) of the engine...!!!
Oil change 10 days ago; oil pressure OK; noise LOUD!!!
Any clues, please...?? Would it be safe to drive to workshop to get proper diagnosis (engine continues to idle OK...just loud 'clatter')??:sick:

    Anymore info?

    What sort of clatter?
    Front of the engine rear?
Did you try turning on your lights and see if this makes it worse? (just thinking maybe alternator as something similar happened with a previous car)

    Anymore info...

Noise is from front of engine (high up..as in tappet noise in old-style engines, with which I am familiar), only much louder. Instead of typical tappet noise it is more of a 'clatter' timing-chain type noise, but seemingly from in top front of plenum....
    Thanks for response.

    Just strange...

    ...how it manifested overnight.
I'd be hessitant to drive it. Perhaps a lifter died?
Sorry I can't be anymore help.
    Good luck,

    Sounds like lifters to me.

What weight oil are you using?

Wonder of the timing belt tensioner may have seized?

    If your game, run the

engine after you warm itup, to round 3.5 4thou rpm
listen if noise gets louder or dies away.if louder
switch off, if its lifter clatter, noise should die off
after a short time.if you put a lighter weight oil in
at the last service,( it takes a little time for residual thick oil to mix with the new oil) and
then suddenly you get that noise.

    Seconded

Tensioner letting go is common, DO NOT even start the engine until checked out!

    It's LIFTERS...!!!

Thanks, guys...am assurred by local mechanic who has worked on other local Zeds that my trouble is the hydraulic lifters. He wanted me to leave the car with him, but I would prefer to have JustJap's mechanics do the job as they know this particular engine....Which brings up my earlier point, would it be (reasonably) safe to do a careful trip across to Kirrawee....???
Oil used is Valvoline 10/50; have used it for years, including the past 3yrs in the Zed.
Thanks again for all the advice; much appreciated. By my fourth re-build I should be able to offer this type of help to other 'Newbies'...;)
