every now and then, I'm getting this weird creaking noise coming from somewhere in the dash. It sounds almost like when you have electricity arcing between two loose connections, but nothing appears to be playing up when it happens.

It occurs regardless of air con, lights etc etc the best i can think of is a loose wire or something, and unlike all the other creaks and groans, i can't for the life of me replicate it, it just occurs randomly

    any one experienced this before?

Could be a loose or broken plastic clip, or just 2 parts rubbing against each other.

I've got one in the wind deflector behind the seats on the convertible that comes and goes.

If you had arcing you should be able to smell it or see/feel it when it catches fire.

    Only just before

    The car caught fire.
Definately need to spend some time to track this down otherwise that could be the worst case scenario.

Check you fuse compartment in the drivers side footwell...loose fuse may be arcing slightly...I had it a while back and it turned out to be a fuse slightly loose.

are you sure about the sound??

is it an electrical arcing sound, or rather the sound of water moving through pipes?? My zed has been making the "moving water" sound behind the dash for the last few years, never been able to work out why. Only does it at start when car is cold. Once warmed up, it stops doing it. I'm assuming its something to do with heatercore, but no leaks have appeared yet. I've heard of this happening on a few zeds, but beats me why....

    Cheers

well had the noise happen again, but was able to replicate it this time

from a cold engine, it seemed to only occur with the revs hovering around 1000 while idling, in park, drive (1 and 2 as well) and reverse, in neutral revs were sitting a bit higher. The car idle was also fairly erratic going with the creaking noise, which is definately coming from somewhere behind the dash/steering wheel.

Thing is I've had it happen before while driving, so ****ed if i know :(

first time i've been able to replicate it though

Creaking dash is not uncommon on many cars, not just Zeds, usually at the sides though in my experience. Yours sounds like it might be a broken or loose mounting bracket, or just a movement between components somewhere. Location of the sound can be misleading too. I had what I thought was a persistant noise from the passenger side of the dash somewhere - turned out, after several months of seeking, to be a loose bolt under the left wheel arch (not on a Z). So try looking further away from where it sounds like it's coming from.

You need to come up to QLD and get zed4life onto it - he's the anti-squeak nazi! :D

Do you have a TT Zed with a 'lifted' dash (from heat)? If something's loose because it's pulling apart as it stretches and flexes, may explain the creaking noise.

I think I win the award for most creaky dash hands down. My dash makes so much noise its not even funny. Its so distracting and makes the car not fun to drive because you can always hear the dash creaking at the sides and the middle. The arch piece that sits over the instruments also makes a hell of a lot of noise because apparently the clips that hold it in place are broken. The guy who fitted my front bar had a look at it and tried to bolt the arch piece in place. It helped a little but not much. When I finally put a stop to all the creaking I will be a very happy Zed owner.

i have a creaking on my dash, i know what it is but its hella annoying... there is this little soft plastic (almost jel like) thing with a wire in it between the dash and the windscreen? anyway glass having soft plastic rubbing up against it, eee eee eee eee e ee ee eee.... you know the sound, like if u rub a wet finger on glass.

if yours sounds like that hit me up, if not Have a nice day.

Taking the dash out sounds like a good idea. Im actually organising a new dash from John (Cresta). Any volunteers to help me pull the current one out and whack the new one in? Home cooked food plus a carton of whatever tickles your tastebuds goes out to anyone up for the challenge!:)
