Looking at a turbo upgrade. Open to high flowed housings or replacement chras but looking for something to match with the 480cc injectors I already have. Not chasing massive power. Just something quicker than stock with heaps of response.
I havent looked at turbo options for a few years so I would be interested in some people's opinions.

I have some mike smith manifolds and will be looking do to a bottom end rebuild soon.

    Thanks

You're doing it the wrong way around, pick the power you're after, the pick the smallest turbo that will achieve that safely. Injectors and intercoolers are much easier to change than turbos.

Maybe look into a GT28R kit, otherwise known as 2560's. Will be good for 350rwkw at their peak on 98, heaps of response.

IMHO 480's are good for stock turbos......

because they provide a safety margin over the oem injectors (370's) when you start 'upping the boost'. Once you go bigger in the turbo, the safety margin begins to dissipate (same scenario as the 370/oem turbo situation).

Unless you are planning on only running standard boost with your larger turbo/480 combo (yea, like that's going to happen ) you will be maxxing out the 480's in no time.

You state you are NOT chasing big power, so I would suggest putting chra's in your oem turbos and combined with the 480's you should end up with a very quick and responsive street zed. (and all at a resonable price)

480cc injectors tend to max out at around 375rwhp (managed this with an auto) with a decent fpr and added base fuel pressure. Some decent highflows would suit these injectors.

T28 (stock turbos with bigger chras) highflows will see around 350rwhp safely.

Stock turbos aren't T28, I think stock auto turbos are T22 lol.

480cc injectors are good for more or less 480rwhp at 100% capacity on a manual car, stock turbos can and will quickly outflow the standard injectors even on 98RON. More than a few cars have maxed out the stock injectors with stock turbos, all at around 270rwkw(361rwhp).

To the OP, if you are running 98RON with larger turbos, 555cc at the least....if E85 around 1000cc+

lol Erm... well yes they are, but highflows are just stock turbs with bigger chra's ie: T28 chra's which is what I was getting at... ;)

Remove the bracketed text and read again:

"T28 highflows will see around 350rwhp safely" - By safely, i mean 15 psi safe tune.

    T22's with T28 chras.

Sorry dude, gotta disagree here, no way you'd ever see 480rwhp with 480cc injectors. They max out wayyy before that. 480 engine hp maybe with added fuel pressure, but not 480rwhp or even close. Tried and tested.

Check out the following calculator for reference also and note flywheel hp at 60bsfc - 65bsfc to be safe:

Regarding the figures and other members with 270kw on stock injectors, those figures pretty much defy logic. Dyno's aint dynos unfortunately.

Shifters car made 400rwkw on 555cc injectors and factory rail pressure

I know of several GTR's making over 320rwkw on the factory 440cc injectors

Chili's zed did 270rwkw on factory 370cc injectors

Hypergear, a turbo maker in melbourne had a zed and on stock injectors also went 270rwkw

Hypergears R33, also on stock injectors(370cc) made 270rwkw and said this was their limit at 100% IDC.

My fathers old 350rwkw skyline ran on 480cc injectors before 740's went in, oh 125+MPH trap speed too.

If your zed is auto, at 85% duty cycle taking into account auto transmission loss and maybe even a conservative dyno 375rwhp sounds about right too. Your right dyno's aren't dyno's, they will all read differently, but the tuners i speak to all agree with the 1cc = 1rwhp on a 6cylinder. I know 85% is the general "safe" limit for injectors however i'm talking maxed out(100%)

Thanks for all the replies guys. Sure is something to think about.

I have a manual Zed, TBH bulk RWKW is of no interest as point and squirt torque and delivery/ response is what I want for a streeter.

Will probably go for something similar in size to GT28R's.
    Bolt up would be best.

I am thinking boost around 1 Bar. Maybe 1.2 Bar. Not silly boost. Something that is tractable. More importantly something that will hold the motor together for many years to come.

At the moment the car has be basics, Big SMIC's, Clutch, Boost, Filter, turbo back exhaust. I have AMS manifolds, 480cc injectors to go in with probably a forged piston kit on the cards too.

Car dyno'ed when I got it at 220rwkw at 10psi without the SMIC's years ago. So 40 - 60 on top of that will be plenty.

    thanks again guys.
