Hi all, I was looking at a Zed for sale, a 1991 Auto TT. The car has currently no exhaust after cat back.

The engine idles fine, quite consistent at 9xx rpm as the car was installed with an aftermarket digital meter that monitors rpm and also boost. At idle the boost gauge stands at -7. Water temperature is normal as well, in the middle after a few minutes. I suspect that the car was also fitted with a turbosmart boost control, with a small switch installed specifically for it, but i'm not too sure about the function of it.

Engine ticks a bit near cylinder 1 and 3, gets a bit louder after 3 mins of startup. I think that's just the lifter ticking, and a good engine flush and quality oil should fix it.

Main problem is that when i rev the engine up to 2.5k rpm and release it immediately, there is a sound coming from the driver side engine, i suspect the turbo, when the rev is dropping. It sounds like something spinning slipped seriously, like a small wheel spin. Tried a few times and the slipping sound persist. Boost gauge however doesn't go above 0.

When i tried to rev the engine higher between 3 - 4k rpm, 2 loud pop came from the engine, but probably from the bottom, bearing in mind that there is no exhaust after the cat-back. Hopefully there is nothing wrong with the engine. It still idles as usual after that, and the slipping sound still persist. Is the driver side turbo out?

Steam coming out from the rear of the engine near the firewall can be noticed after that, which i suspect oil on the exhaust manifold as the previous place where the car was parked has oil spots on the floor. I suspect certain oil leakage at the driver's side turbo, but the oil spot on the floor was in the middle of the car. Haven't had the opportunity to get under the car as there wasn't appropriate equipment at that stage.

    Any ideas anyone? Cheers.

first I would not expect a stationary Z to produce boost, I have been told I am full of crap about this by others but IMO very few turbos will boost without load on the engine. (unless you have launch control or similar),

You have spooted several issues that may or may not need repair or maintanance, I would suggest that unless you are motivated enough to learn how to do this work, skilled enough to do this work or rich enough not to worry about costs look for another better condition car.
