Rookie question time. Where in the pic below are the timing belt tensioners?? After a long drive, I get a whirring noise from what appears to be the timing belt covers. But only at idle. I thought maybe it was one of the other pulleys like powersteering or A/C, but the sound is definitely loudest when I have my ear above the timing belt covers. Using search revealed that the timing belt tensioners or idler pulleys can start to make noise when worn. Whats a rough estimate (including labour) to get this fixed if it turns out to be the tensioner or something timing belt related? I had my 100k service done about 1 and half years ago, but dont know if these things were replaced.Cheers [image]http://www.aus300zxclub.com/photodb/e/e5.jpg[/image]

The oil I am using is AMSOIL 10w40. Its due for a change in another 1000km, and I change it every 10K.

    Maybe your water pump?....

.....maybe you should try removing the belts one at a time to rule out any thing else, such as your water pump

    on second thoughts.....

yeah I've had a closer listen and it just seems to come from the front of the engine. Could be anything I guess, old belt, a noisy pulley, who knows. And noises tend to travel so its hard to pinpoint where its coming from exactly. And it only does it when the engine is hot. It doesnt sound nasty, its just a "new" sound that wasnt there before. Someone else might not even pick it and just let it go as normal engine noise from many moving parts. Wont worry about it for now. Obviously if it gets much louder then I'll get it checked.

ive got a noise now im my motor >

talk to a few people seems to be coming from the intake cams and might be cause im running 5-40w oil but mine is newly rebuilt so thought would be ok to use.. also jedi have u fitted the headers yet and if so did u dyno the car before and after u fitted thats my next mod just curious how much it makes on ur setup cheers

I got that same noise Mark....

when you find out what it is let me know. I did the same thing, put my ear right on top of the timing covers and heard it aswell.Max

    Check your idler pulley bearings........

If you didn't change your idler bearings at the 100K service, it a good chance that they might be showing sights of wear and getting a little noisy.
Just remove your timing belt and see how freely the idlers rotate. The bearings are easy to replace. Hope this helps.OZZ

    headers.....

yeah my car also has 2 new heads as of about 7 months ago when my engine was out. But the sound has only really been there for about a few weeks. Who knows, maybe its the cars way of telling me its due for an oil change. Its nearly time anyway. As for headers, sorry dont have a before and after comparison yet. On bob's Vericom, my car is making around the 140-145rwkw mark. I dont know if this is too high so I'd be interested to see what figure I get on the dyno. Anyway, this was before the headers. What ever the figure is, I would assume it would be a little higher with the headers. The headers didnt really do much for initial take off (i think UD pulley would help here), but the car is more responsive and revs better through out the whole rev range. As soon as I have some figures with the headers I'll let you know...:)Cheers

    Lemme have a listen Mark

After RZM's car (and to a lesser extent my old one) I know exactly what worn idler pulleys sound like.Ben

    well.....

spoke to spencer, and when they did my 100k service eons ago (in august 2002) they replaced the timing belt tensioner and idler pulleys. They do it as standard, regardless of how new they may look. So I dont think its them making the noise. Surely they wouldnt be worn already?? Its been about 30k since then. I think the sound is coming from one of the other pulleys. Are you anywhere near prahran during the day so that I may be able to meet with you so you can have a listen. Emerald is a bit of mission I'm afraid..:)Cheers
