I have no idea what could have or would have cause this as i don't really thrash the wing nut out of my zed. Anyways if you can offer any help to my problem it would be greatly appreciated! thanks :)

    Lifter

    Check your oil viscosity

got to agree with the other guys. If it went away after a short period then it is the lifters draining down from the car sitting for a few days or longer. The longer it sits the more the oil drains out and the less lubrication/cushioning you will have on start up. With my car it hardly gets used so after a week sitting they are noisy on start up and after a month - Holy F--- they rattle like a freight train. I will one day put on a pre-oiler. I wonder what others think about this rattle and if new liffters would rattle the same after sitting for a month. I have removed and cleaned my lifter but the problem after sitting is still there. After a few seconds they pressurize then it goes away but the noise in a worry.
    Cheers Dave

If you let it sit that long try priming the engine prior to starting. You can pull your fuel pump fuse and crank for 10 seconds or so should se the oil pressure gauge move.

I don't have lifter tick but still do this when it sits for a while. I have a switch on my fuel pump, simply crank for a few seconds, soon as there is oil pressure flick the switch and start her up.

What's the best way to fix this? My Z31 gets mad lifter tick, all the time. I've heard replacing the oil might help, or getting an additive that will help. Or am I better off replacing something? Expensive? Difficult?

Is it likely to cause any future damage? From what I've heard it's not a critical issue, just sounds a bit shit :p

Sounds like lifter tick to me . When lifters get clogged and sludgy from old oil they can take a while to come good I assume . Im guessing when you go for a drive and the oil heats up and gets thinner it makes its way to the lifters .

    Only a guess :)

I think people run a diesel oil to clean them up ?

Yep, there has been previous posts where people have put additive cleaners to their oil, and their engine has died.

To me the fact that is still there after a short while would say it's worse that just a lifter tick. Lifter ticks usually go away after a very short time unless theres a major lifter failure. Use desiel oil instead of an additive as it breaks the junk down slowly where as additives do it quickly causing filter pick up blockages.

If it was a rod bearing like previously mentioned it would have spun and failed by now , Rods dip into the sump and collect oil unlike lifters where the oil has to be pumped thru and and then make its way into the lifter with movement of same .

Still think its lifter related .

Anyone that puts their own motor together can see why its so important to change oil and keep it clean . I still wonder how the hell the oil gets everywhere it does :p

    FIRST RULE OF ZED MAINTENANCE:

If a hammer will not fix it, you have an electrical problem.

I gave my car a hard time for 350km's and the engine is still running (since I found out its a rod bearing, I haven't driven it), but it's hanging in there...

Lots of Zed's have that same noise kawasakirider.

As far as i knew it was something to do with the VTC spings.

this will explain what rod knock is

this is what rod knock sounds like

I dont beleive your sound is rod knock, its just the usual vg30de/tt lack of oil to heads trick.

Also, the sound will come from the bottom of the engine when its rod knock.

I bet your sound will come from the top from the rocker/valve covers.

    Typical VTC noise/cam noise

imagine the cornering/gforce oiling issues we would be having if we still had splash style lubrication....... thats what the oil galleries and oil pump, etc are for now days.

Thanks for the heads up mate. My engine DID have rod knock and on its final voyage to get swapped out it almost wouldn't move the car.

New engine in the car now and she's going sweet, just did a 1000km trip to Sydney :)
