ok, put it in context... momo seat covers used to trick up the interior of a severely neglected 18 year old commodore wagon is just sad,
new black throw overs in a decent car like a zx which it comes down to a personal preference as to taste or not is quite fine.

glad i could clear that up, any other questions, dont hesitate to shoot them off.

curious how you see them as gay spiders though, i always picked them as being Asexual, thats half the reason why i bought these ones. i like ambiguity, psychologically you see what you want to see , or so they say :/ awkward!!!

not as much as you would think, but also despite the look they don't seem to be as popular as other rims because they come in a bit heavy. they should look pretty mean with a set of directional tread federal silicas on them ;)

    they look awesome

    Moving on...

i did but i deleted them from the server they were on, so they arent here... theres not much point because very soon the whole car is getting stripped, sanded back and completely rebuilt. paint, interior, engine and all, (if all goes to plan) I'll take pics as i'm doing it but prob wont post again until its done.

definately going to put some pics up of the rims when they get in though.

can you give me a write up on how to do this? what size is the gauge? is there any cutting to the cluster? can the plastic screen thing still be placed back in once this is done?

  10. waynoz

    waynoz New Member

    mornin Anti,

    yes, 60, no, and yes.

    Yes

start by chosing a gauge that has a shallow body, i think the depth of the cluster is 45 - 50 mm so the gauge i used was a 40mm deep gauge and I didnt have to cut out the rear which i didnt want to do because i would have to re route some of the lighting electicals (not a huge task but cbf)
once the gauge is glued (yeah i glued it, only way to make sure it is going to stay in place, i tried to use brackets but it kept slipping down, road vibration would surely make it move), the wires for the gauge should fit in the old globe slot which you won't be using for the old gauge you took out so no cutting necessary.
oh, the old gauge just unscrews and to do that you just unscrew the cluster itself, i could throw up some pics but its not hard to figure out.
i glued mine over the carbon trim that i have and it was a snug fit, im not sure of how well it would fit with just the cluster but i can't imagine it being too different

    60

the gauge is a 60mm gauge, the 52 would prob fall through the hole left by the oem gauge but the 60 seems to sit in just right.

    No

No the cluster is not cut, unless you get a deeper gauge or need to enlarge a hole to fit the wires you shouldnt need to cut anything.

    Yes

yeah the screen isnt affected by the install, I was going to install an adjustable gauge (for lighting or something) and was thinking of cutting a hole in the screen so i could access the buttons but decided to go with this gauge because its the same as my boost controller. there is easily enough space between the cluster surface and the clear screen to accommodate even a gauge with a thicker face than this one.

just a warning though, I've used glue for one other thing in my interior and the heat that you get inside the car sometimes caused it to fail. i'm not ruling out that with a few hot days and some road vibration the gauge might come loose and i'll have to pull the cluster out and reglue it, but thats not a big drama, if it happens it happens, like where my boost controller is, if it fails, ill just have to reassess. I'm not exactly building production vehicles so hopefully i won't be sued.

    The Story Of WaynoZ

I first saw him when I was looking on Ebay for a Z to buy. it was advertised for 3000$ as is or 5000$ with a rwc but no rego. I rang up the company that had him and had a long chat about the car. they were a quick fix and sell company, basically they bought later model cars from the auctions cheap and fixed them up for a rwc then sold them of to make a profit. I asked why they were interested in this car and the guy said they like to buy cars like these for a bit of fun.

The car was still sitting at an auction yard on the east side of melbourne where they had bought it from. I wanted to check it out before buying it so I drove down from Geelong, as usually whenever i'm around melbourne i got lost in suburbia the day i drove down to check it out and the time was getting late so i didnt have time to waste. eventually after inquiring at a servo i was put in the right direction and ended up back where i had driven past several times in the last hour trying to find the place.

when i got to the auction yard I asked the front desk if they had a white zx sitting around the auction yard and i was told that they wouldnt know and i'm not alowed to walk around the yard to check. My heart sank, I had driven around for 2 hours to find this place and i wouldnt be able to see him today. it just wasnt acceptable. I asked if it might be somewhere esle as it was a finance company repossession auction and they said i could check the shed that was just next door. I walked inot the shed and didnt have much hope of seeing her as every car in the shed was no more than 2 years old at the most. there was a cafe, closed, just to the right of the entrance so i decided to walk around and see what might be on the other side. as i saw the other side of the shed there was a tall sign that said something like 'repossession' and my heart raced with excitement, as i turned the corner of the cafe i could see the other large roller door of the shed partly opened and sitting right in front, facing freedom I saw him.
i can't explain the smile that came on my face as i saw the lines of this Z in the flesh, not 20 metres in front of me, i'd only really seen these cars on youtube or in pics on the internet, trying to piece together what they look like and how it must feel to sit inside. I walked closer and began looking well over the entire body. 'seems pretty straight' i thought, being bitten many times before buying cars which had far too many body issues to mention, i looked well over the outside of the car, the paint was pretty scratched, so too was most of the glass, but the panels looked pretty straight, there was a knock in the rear of the car which made a gap between the bumper and the tail light surround but nothing major, I completely missed a dint in the passenger side rear panel but its only quite subtle, there was some slight rusty chip marks here and there, but the doors where straight as a die and so was almost every other panel on the car. the front bar was in bad shape, but that didnt bother me too much, I got inside and poped the hood. I sat staring at the engine for some time, admiring how sleek and low the front of the car came out towards me from the engine, the front bar seemed to go back for a mile until you reached the engine bay. I looked for a while wondering what condition the engine was in but unfortunately i wasnt allowed to start it because i was no the buyer.

I put down the hood, making note of the scratched paint and wondering if it could be buffed out. then i went and sat in the car. the clutch was quite heavy, but no different from some V8's that i had driven and at present i was only driving a 4 cylinder telstar. it felt like i was sitting in a ferarri or a lamborghini as i sat in the cockpit, going back and forth with the gears trying to figure out if there might be any problems with the gearbox and in my mind hopeing for the best. the interior was in a poor state, but not as poor as some other Z's i was looking at buying. I couldnt open the hatch because i didnt have the keys and the hatch release didnt work then. but what i did notice was genuine fairlady floormats sitting in the back of the car. I got them out and put them in the front where they belong. I got out the car again and walked around looking at the pile on the matts and how close they seemed to be to the seats, this thing was low.

i was playing with the targas when two indians walked up to me and started asking me about the car
'Did you get it', they asked, smiling.
'No, but i'm going to buy it off the guy who did' i replied.

we sat and talked for some time about the car, they knew what it was and they had their eye on it too, but this one wasnt for them. that was my first experience talking to people about ZX's and i realised that this is the car that every man wants, but so few are ever going to buy, it will always be that elusive 'dont have the time or the money or my wife won't let me have some fun' car.

I jumped in the drivers seat again, by now i was completely in love with this car and i wasnt going to let it go. I rung up the company and spoke to the guy
'is this car still for sale?' I asked,
    'yeah, its still for sale',
    "No, It's Not" I replied :)

I agreed to wire him the money as soon as i got back to Geelong, well, a deposit anyway and then I would pay the rest in 3 weeks.

thus began the longest 3 weeks of my life....

4 and a half weeks later I had the money to pay for the rest of the car, but it was in a non cashable cheque which i had got on the day that i had made the trip down to frankston to pay off the car. I went to a cash advance place and lost 300$ of the cheque to get it cashed by them in an hour. but at least i would have the money that day and i wouldnt have to come back the next day. I took the train to frankston, but had to take a bus and then walk around some industrial zone trying to find the place. i finally found the company, and they were running out of some small car wash, detailing shed in the back blocks just out of town. my car wasnt there but in the meantime i had a chat with Mr S and finalised the purchase. a little while later a minion arrived with my Z.

"She's fast" said Mr S, "I had to check to make sure it wasnt a turbo"

I got a little scared that i might not be able to handle the car, but after walking around it once more in the daylight and having a small chat with the seller, he handed me the keys and the paperwork including a RWC and told me not to let the guys at vicroads walk around it too much when i get the rego done. with that I jumped in and took off, ready to make my way back to Geelong. as soon as i got in the car and drove down the road i was really unimpressed with the power. I got lost (once again, as usualy) in suburbia and eventually made my way to some highway which would lead the way home.
After about 20 minutes driving i noticed that my left foot was getting quite warm and that the engine really wasnt running that great. I pulled over to the side of the road thinking the car was going to catch on fire as i got a call from the salesmen, he was checking that i made it in the right direction alright and gave me directions home, I ended up going through the tollway, I mean, how can they catch a car if it doesnt have plates right, (I had a permit), with a lump in my throat i asked him about the problems with heat near the gearbox and how it doesnt seem to have power but he said i just wasnt used to driving a V6 and in all honesty i really didnt give too many shits to argue if the car was mechanically ****ed. i mean i bought yet another car without test driving it first so what do i expect.

I got home after an hour or so and once again, almost getting lost in melbourne and causeing a few accidents because i couldnt see out of the rear of the car through bubbly window tint and a dodgy rearview. but eventually i did make it back alive and with my very own Z :D

a week after buying it I had severe mechanical problems. i was struggling to reach 60km/h and had no accelleration. I got Brytechs number off of the forum and gave him a call, first having a chat about politics then talking about what was wrong with the car. He asked me to bring it in. the day i took it in i was struggling to make 40km/h, I was just about in tears when i got to Bryans shop, i've heard how much these things are to work on, i was guessing maybe a new box, and that the compression might be shot, my mind went to 4 figures, i was terrified at how much it would cost me to fix.

I got to Bryans and he asked me what was wrong, he sat in the car and i took it for a drive explaining what was wrong. we got back to the shop and he rambled off several issues he already picked up.
"Whats the damage" I asked, thinking still, big figures.
"with 'this and that' <<insert technical mumbo jumbo) you'r looking at around 280$" he said with his trade mark grin on his face, and i say grin as in a well deserved grin given how much he knows he's shit.
    "are you shitting me?"
I couldnt believe it, this car was ****ed. and he reckons he could get it running for 280$. we sat around and had a few more convos and i looked around his shed a bit, still with a lump in my throat, but this time thinking how much of a saviour this guy was.

280$ and one day later i was back on the road. easily getting her upto 140km/h but she was definately due for her 100k service but that got done eventually.

fast forward in time a few months and i'm driving my Z from Geelong through to St Leonards and was on my way to ocean grove when my heater hose went going up a hill at 80km/h. I didnt know whether it was smoke or steam coming from the engine so i pulled to the side of the road and made a run for the opposite bank just in case. after a few minutes with no explosion i figured it was safe and went over to the car. I popped the hood and saw that water was absolutely everywhere. I was stranded, I couldnt get hold of Bryan, this girl i was sort of seeing at the time was in a meeting and couldnt come out to rescue me, it was getting dark and i was on a stretch of road that might not see anyone else come past for a few hours or the next day.

my phone battery was flat and all i could do was text. bryan sent me the details of a guy who might have a tow truck near by but i couldnt get hold of him. with no other option i started the car up and she seemed to want to run. so in what might not have been the best decision of my life i drove the car back to Geelong, Averaging 20km/h with hazards on , down the side of the highway, finally pulling into Bryans old shed just after dark, with my stereo pumping out some good old rock which i was singing away to for the majority of the past hour long 15 - 20km/h journey. I can't remember what song was playing as i pulled into the street. as soon as i arrived, Kal came out and lifted my bonnet, I was still smiling after spending the last hour singing at the top of my lungs in what was left of my Z, and steam and smoke was coming from every surface of my engine..
"shit" i thought. "Looks like i might have to go a TT afterall :(" ;)

since that fateful night, my Z has been sitting out my front door on the road, still registered, still insured for a good 8 months while i've been spending all my money on gadgets and mods which will eventually be installed. My neighbours probably think im nuts walking out and sitting in the thing every third day installing something else or measuring something else, and for a while i was getting a new parcel delivered at least every day or every second day which would be something i orders from the states or the uk.

after such a long wait, and saving up to make sure i can afford everything, this week is the week. Bryan has made room in his shed for waynoz to come in and undergo a TT transplant, the engine bay will be resprayed, mods will definately be happening and lots of parts and gadgets installed. there is a shit ton of work that needs to be done. everything is being changed, new engine, paint, exterior, wheels, interior etc, so although I fell in love with a white 2+0 na sitting on 17" advanti rims, now Waynoz is going to be something completely new.

thousands of hours of googling '300zx' and youtubeing and ebaying trying to find all the right parts and looking for just the right style. and it all begins this week. and what do you know, Tomorrow is my 29th Birthday.

    thanks for Reading

    ...and heres another cool story...

"And there I am in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at three o' clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&M's to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door and mentions there's a little sweetshop on the edge of town. So, we go, and - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby breaking into this little sweetshop right? Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. Well I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son, that's a different story altogether... I had to beat them to death with their own shoes... Nasty business really... But sure enough, I got the M&M's and Ozzy went on stage and did a GREAT show."

You poor, mad fool. I thought it was only I who gushed on Mills & Boon style about these machines. Dammit, Waynoz, I'm all emotional now. They get under your skin, control your thoughts, keep you from having a life due to empty pockets, but I couldn't imagine life without one. Just have a look at me; I quit Z's completely, then 3 weeks later I bought another one. I'm into my 5th year of sacrifice and am completely addicted - for life.

Its good to see the transitional pics. Cheers for the read, enjoyed every bit of it.

thanks man. I suspected the clear screen didn't fit back on over the gauge, which would be shit...

Surprised there's no cutting to mount the gauge? That's pretty nifty that it just sits in there so well.

I'm ditching my GReddy pillar and just going for a boost gauge in the cluster. Less aggressive look.
