had a small and persistant leak from the power steering system. Just a few drops on the floor each day but over time it started to get to me. IB dropped-in to see me recently so we thought we might find the source of the leak and try to fix (we should have known better).

I'll start by saying that IB is really good at diagnosing the source of any kind of fluid leak and he quickly spotted this one. It was the low pressure hose connecting the pump to the reservoir. Apparently, the hose clamp at the pump end was loose and it was impossible to tighten it as the screw was facing the fender.

So, to replace the hose we did as follows:

    a) drain coolant and remove radiator hoses
    b) drop sway bar
    c) remove alternator (shit of a job - need small hands)
    d) remove power steering reservoir (tipped half a litre of power steering oil onto my head)
    e) undo a few harness clips holding the wiring loom under the reservoir (started swearing alot by now - helped a bit)
    f) cut the offending hose at the beack of the pump (enjoyed this bit)
    g) spin what's left of the hose to unscrew the hose clip (get hammer and pound the hose clamp flat just because I wanted to do this - therapy)
    h) replace hose and use new hose clamps
    i) reverse the above

Took about 5 f^&king hours to complete.

This hose is my contender for the "Bastard Hose from Hell".

    Cheers

Ah yes, fixed the same leak a month ago when

I was doing my thermo fan conversion. I managed to eliminate the leak by sneaking a 10mm ring spanner in there after removing the rubber boost hoses. After dropping the spanner a few times I managed to get a full rotation of the clamp screw, no more leak:thumbsup:

When the engine eventually comes out for whatever reason, I will be replacing all the hoses in that vacinity.

Yes - that would be a contender for 'The Bastard Hose from Hell'

But the Z has lots of contenders.;)

    Replaced the same one

Did it during plenum pull - was easy with intake hard & soft pipes out of the way. :)

    I found a $6 Gates hose as replacement, part # 02-0911

Having attempted to tighten it before, I agree it's a bastard to get to.... but not as bad as the LH turbo cooling hose. :(
