Just wondering how often you change cars? I've had a few long termers and "fettling" anything second hand is always a bit of a pain. Reliable, fun car = basic to a happy life!

    Thanks

My cars usually last quite a long time. Anything from 1 year to 10 years, probably around 5 on average. But with normally 3 cars - one to drive to work, one for weekends and one (or 2) for the kids there would be a change every couple of years. Last year I sold 2 and bought 2. The Patrol I bought new lasted 11 years, the Z31 1 year, the Jag Mk2 9 years, the Jag SIII 4 years, the MGB 2 years, the 280ZX 3 years and still going.

Second hand does not mean unreliable. There may be a period initially to sort it out, but then when you know the car and how to look after it, it is as reliable as you want to make it.

To me, a reliable, new car is a boring car. The only chance you get to get dirty is to change the oil and the brake pads.

not very often, I've only had 3 cars in the last 15 years. 1st car was a TC Cortina wagon, had that for 3 years, got defected so I wrecked it and got an XF Falcon, had that for about 8 or 9 years but it had to go when I started moving all around the country. I've had the Zed for just on 7 years and have no intention of selling it in any forseeable future. A second car would be nice though, maybe a Stagea or Legnum...

    every few years

Brought a 1984 Mitsi Galant Sigma (Sirus dash 3x2) when i was at uni, kept that until near the end of uni when i brought my most boring car (a 1998 mitsi galant, 2L non turbo). I was bored with that after a couple of years and brought a 1991 300ZX NA (had no idea what a Z was then), Kept that about 2 years then brought an R34 GTT. Moved from NZ to australia mid last year so i sold the skyline (silly me should have brought it with me given the price difference here!) and brought my current 1989 300ZX TT.

Well when i was little dad had a thing of getting attached to a car for years untill it pretty much died or sold it for $5 bucks literally(this was a fine running old volvo and dad sold it for $5 to a guy who noticed it and wanted it)...

Now since im a little older now:) 18, i try to change cars every now and then. In yr 10 i got a nice looking soarer, a yr later got the 300zx tt and just a year ago got the lexus gs300......now sold the soarer, gs300 for sale and going to put up the zed for sale to.....

hmm....thinking of a 98+ 5 series bmw, and a cheapo car for dad like a volvo s40 as i dont think he needs TT power at the age of nearly 60.

What i say: CHANGE YOUR CAR AS YOU CHANGE YOUR CLOTHS....there are sooo many nice cars, pitty im not going to live to about 1000 years

I've had my licence for 8 years and have had 3 cars, 2 of which I still own.

I started with a Renault 20, funny looking car but very comfortable.

Then moved onto an 87 Corolla, which is my daily driver and is still going stong despite being seriously neglected.

Then bought the Zed just over a year ago and I don't plan on selling it anytime soon.

So I guess I don't go through cars very quickly.

My mate on the other hand, whose had his licence a year longer than me has been through 10 cars and a motor bike.
