I've been looking at the nissan SC from the navara In the states the navara (frontiera?) had an optional supercharger. This car has the most similar engine to the NA zed I can think of. So I was wondering if there would be any parts that would be compatible. Is your SC the same as the ones for the navara? Also the navara was able to produce 50% more power and torque (over the non SC model). That would put the old zed at nearly 200rwkW. However they may be doing it on a diesel therefore can put the boost way up.
I reckon the supercharger is an ace idea. I have thaught about it, was going to go a CAPA centrufugal, but the dollars put me off it. So i went for the internal work. But when i need more im thinkin turbo.
Although the Narvara did have a VG30, it wasn't quite how we know it... The supercharged one made less power than our NA's, bit like the VG30ET's. What I wanted to do was grab the bored out VG33 version and wack the twincam heads on it with the VG30DE forged crank and rods and high comp pistons and have the meanest NA around Then I found out the heads wouldn't bolt up Such a sad little Chris
You do realize that the stock VG30ET here in Australia and Japan made 170kw from the factory at only a measely 6.7psi unintercooled right? Just had to correct that lol You will hit a brick wall with a supercharger on a small displacement engine eventually, they are not good on a VG for big power period. I've seen it done, it was expensive and although cool not worth it in the end. (Supercharger type unknown) Video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=oRJfJdmoLt0 As for the supercharger on some of the VG33s, have you actually seen this damn thing installed? lol It's huge, and it sticks out of the hood and looks plain stupid. (USDM Xterra Supercharger) The reason you dont see many supercharged 300ZX's is because it's a waste of money for minimal gain. People have done it for the "wow factor" and the results have been discussed and it's agreed upon by just about everyone that it's simply not an efficient way to make good power on a small displacement engine, end of story. Turbo all the way!
Please explain Please backup your comments with some facts/evidence to convince me. Also the pix of the zed you show does not have a positive displacement blower. I have never seen a positive displacement type on a Z32.
Just do some homework about superchargers and their usage on small displacement engines. It's been done by others who barely managed to make 300rwhp with one on a VG30. I dont have any dyno sheets, it was from the horses mouth so to speak. They're very hard to intercool aswell which is another limitation... Dont take my word for it, go and price a supercharger and then look at how much extra fabrication is required to make it actually work right. And then take into account that after all of that you wont get much more than 300-400rwhp and then you decide if it's worth it. How many quick Japanese drag cars do you see with superchargers? Err, how about practically none?
You're heavier too remember and we're talking about stock figures here Completely off subject though, next time follow behind me on the cruise and "try" to keep up! hehe Back on topic, supercharged cars are cool as shit and the "wow factor" is extreme. You just have to keep in mind that it's not the most efficient way to make power on a small displacement engine, but it's by no means lame to do. It's a very difficult job to complete and anyone who does it successfully should be commended in my opinion.
Sweet, I'll turn the boost up and have my zorst done by then too... Should be fun, I'll wait for you at the first stop so you can catch up! hehe joking, or am I? I know this is said a million times, but going turbo will be the best bang for your buck. Although if you're going for the wow factor then do it, but it's not going to be an easy install. Having the room was a big problem on the SOHC VG, the DOHC would be even worse in that department. It's going to stick out of the hood, which I'm not even sure is road legal here unless you get really creative.
It's not if you keep the revs up, i.e entering corners in second gear and gassing it hard out of them then into third and back into second for the next corner... It's all in the driver!
Exactly! I keep hearing "oh turbs are useless for corners" Get out of it! As long as you keep it in the right gear, and correspondingly correct rpm, there will be all the potential for power & boost that you need. Obviously you wont be boosting to 17psi, 5500rpm in 4th gear But maybe 4500 rpm in second. Yummy
all said and done, but I would still like to investigate for myself. My mechanic was enthused when I mentioned it to him a few months ago.
You will have one very unique ride that's for sure, those two pics I posted are the only 300ZX's I've seen supercharged and I dont think I've seen a supercharged Z32 yet but I'm sure there would be a couple out there. I'd like to see what you can come up with as far as mounting it goes, run it by your mechanic and see what he comes up with. The only rule would be, no holes in the hood allowed so good luck with that! lol
