Anyone have a write up on the steps required for this?

Just want to have everything ready before I rip my spoiler off.

    Series I Rear Spoiler Removal

here is my very rough how to guide which doesn't really show exactly how to do the job but might help give you an idea what to do.

The spoiler is mounted to the hatch via 4 screws, 6 clip strong glue and double sided tape.

I first removed all the screws I could find holding the spoiler to the hatch.

From their I used a flexible Stanley knife to cut the double sided tape which travels along the back part of the spoiler. I discovered their were 3 additional glue spots under the middle sections of the spoiler which I had to also cut through to free the spoiler from the car.

After an hour or so and with the help of my brother we managed to cut and pull the spoiler off the hatch keeping it mostly intact. The weight difference with the spoiler off the hatch was huge and I was defiantly happy to see the old spoiler gone.

Thanks heaps adam! I may require your assistance on the weekend if you have time!

What did you use to clean up the residue left behind?

Well I used a concentrated cleaner (simple green) clean the paint work. but the double sided tape was a pain to get off. my hatch was going to be painted anyways so I used a sticker scrapper to scrap the tape off. The glue spots are alot tougher and its like soft rubber so I couldn't get it all off myself.

Thin wire or fishing line can help to cut through the glue/ tape etc to help get it off.

You may find rust under the spoiler after 20 years but most turn out ok

What about the holes for the third brake light? Is everything there ready from stock or will anything need to be drilled or added?

My spoiler has pretty much fallen off, I doubt there is going to be much of an issue with cutting it. Only one side is still attached with a small amount of glue that I can see from the outside. Not too worried about rust as I will potentailly be replacing the hatch eventually due to the previous owner ruining the demister with their terrible tint job.

Obviously there will be no third brake light holes once the spoiler is removed!

Brake light options are inside the window with a generic light or custom one!

If you head to the Brazilian back then the holes are already included in the Brazilian back with the brake light already fitted (which I think offhand is a 94+ spoiler-less back)

You will have to fill the four holes on the hatch from the spoiler being removed and the brake light you will have to rewire them to fit the existing brake light loom once you decide to go custom window brakelight or Brazilian brakelight

My sig picture shows what the Brazilian back and brake-light look like! You can see the brakelight just above the rear centre SuperZ badge even though its not "on" as such

    Cheers
    JC

I know what I'm talking about SuperZ, hahaha. You may misunderstood my question.
Does the hatch have holes to fit a genuine third brake light panel from stock or will I have to drill the holes in the back of the hatch so the clips have somewhere to attach to?

You'll need to file the holes to suit the clips that should come with the new brake light.

    Also clean up with prepsol.

I did it, the entire process took me a total of 15 minutes. Pretty sure we broke a zed record of spoiler removal -> third brake light installation. I ended up using silicone to install the light as it was cracked to begin with.
