    Hi all,

been reading around, not really sure if I've got my head around this... changed from auto to 5 speed, but kept my NA rear end. I'm not sure if the box is a NA or TT box, as an NA driveshaft slotted straight in, however the box came out of a TT with a TT drive train...There is no spacer on the starter so either its a TT box with Tt flywheel or NA with NA flywheel. donor car was definately a factory TT...

anyhoo Chris swapped the sensor gear out of my NA auto box onto the 5 speed sensor in the manual box. the speedo has not worked since installation. I have pulled the sensor, some wear on the gear (blue), and tested with a multimeter. it works as per service manual. checked wires through to behind d/s headlight, all good. put rear wheels up and turned, the sensor is not turning with the gear box. also there is no speed sensor warning from consult, so I conclude that the sensor is working and plugged in right, but not engaging in the gear box.

So, i notice there are different parts listed on Coz for NA/TT auto and 5 speed speed sensors, and different gears. The speed sensor gear must be on the output shaft and hence can only vary due to diff ratio. Also I hear the NA and TT boxes are identical inside, which means the gear in the box that drives the speed sensor must be the same TT to NA. This means either the sensors are calibrated differently or they use a different size gear on the sensor. Since I see different gears for NA and TT on Coz, I guess this is the case.

HOWEVER, two different size gears shouldnt engage at the same distance from the gear in the speed box, the NA gear should be larger and hence the speed sensor shaft must be offset differently NA to TT.

Can anyone with experience tell me if this is the case?
Do NA and TT speed speed sensors have different shaft offsets?
Can an NA auto speed sensor gear work on a 5 speed sensor?

I know I many have to order new hears from Coz, but dont want to waste time ordering the wrong bits. Links:

    Any experience much appreciated....

It's annoying when the pictures they show are generic and recycled.

The manual drive sensors are longer in body/shaft length compared to the auto drive sensors. The length of the actual drive gear too is longer on a manual drive gear compared to the autos. I think what's happening is the auto drive gear on the manual drive sensor isn't quiet long enough to engage the helical worm gear in the manual box. I recall reading someone doing this and then showing photos of what's happening. The very edge of the drive gear was meshing but not enough to drive the sensor.

Now if your box was pulled from an oem tt zed. It's fair to say you've got a tt drive sensor. All the swaps you attempt will not make up for the fact you need a na manual drive gear and na manual sensor.

I tried to wrap my head around it also when i got the tt box to put into the na zed. I ultimately ended up trading my tt drive sensor assembly for a na drive sensor assembly. The drive sensors are internally configured differently to account for the final gear ratios.

You may be also to Jimmy something up to have it calibrate correctly but i feel it's all too much effort. Hence why no one advertises a fix for it. You just have fo swap thd whole unit out for the required needs.

Thanks both, can confirm that NA speed sensor shaft is offset to accomedate different gear size. Hence I think my TT sensor with NA gear is simply not meshing/engaging with the gear in the transmission that drives it. Have ordered an NA manual sensor from Adelaide Z cars, so will have a TT sensor up for sale soon

ah noz i did not see that. do they mean flip the actual plastic gear around on the shaft? or install the sensor 180degrees rotated in the hole?

actually says only for autos you need to flip the sensor. ah well once this NA sensor gets here I'll have all the possible parts and be able to come up with something. i hope
