Sitting in a Supra

There's a guy in my area that had a 300ZX for sale not so long ago. He works as a security guard at a chemist shop. Lo and hehold there's a mid 90s Supra there yesterday with the same wheels as his Nissan and up for sale.

So wondered over and had a chat and a look and a sit in. Had often thought about a Supra TT one day but never driven or sat in on. This one yesterday was a dark brown or purple, NA, manual.

Gotta say the gearshift is well placed but everything else is so angled. It's like you're in front of a pinball machine. The wheel looks ok and this car had a max rev gauge which I guess comes on when you hit max rpm. Under the bonnet a fair size conical aircleaner..

Yesterday was only a look see. Getting into the Zed which must be an earlier design was a lot airer and perhaps the layout is more classical. There seemed a lot more plastic in the Supra even under the bonnet.

Not sure how whether I'd find the SUpra claustrophobic long term.

Any thoughts or first hand experience here guys?

Funny thing, I originally was going to get a Supra, but after sitting in a few and then the Zed, then back into the Supra I found the Toyota interior a bit weird and cheap compared to the zed (that whole wrap around thing with the dash  ). The Supra looks a lot bigger and bulbous compared to the zed too, so thats why I didn't get a Supra, though if I ever go TT I may stray.....:p

I always liked the look of the Supra cockpit to be honest. It really looked like a drivers car in that everything was angled towards the driver.

    Meh

My former housemate owned a supra and all I can say is meh.... Overrated.

The interior gets old quick, the instruments, although warped around you are placed apart, almost like darts on a dartboard. The main thing that they have over a Z is that they are newer. I also find the shape of the car is too "bubbly". The rear isnt bad, but the front, fto anyone?

Anyway these are just my opinions, from having driven it, been driven in it, and seeing it everyday for many months.

PS when I say "meh" and "overrated" I mean when compared to other great sports cars. Of course when compared to normal family cars etc, then yes they are fantastic.

I always loved jeremy clarksons comment on the dashboard of an old porsche he was driving:

"Its like porsche have taken all the instruments, shoved them up their nose and sneezed them out all over the dash". classic clarkson!

If I could have afforded a Supra at the time I was buying I woud've got one, specially if I could find a aerotop in manual  I still love my Z, and i do think that the Z interior is classier, just the Supra is a bit more 'modern' When I see one go past, we give each other jealous looks, so it equals out I spose :D

But it does only have one exhaust :zlove:

I have been lucky to drive a TT Supra 6 speed for the whole day driving all over the countryside, and then dropped it off and hoped in my TT. MY GOD WHAT WAS I THINKING LEAVING MY ZED BEHIND LIKE THAT!!!! The Supra felt like it was a ton heavier, not only in the handling but also the acres of dash and trim. The Zed's is minimal and so much sportier. The Zed just rails around corners and had all the go where it was needed.

300 ZED EX all the way baby!

Oh, didn't know you had a NA. Though were the aerotops cheaper? From what i have heard they are much rarer.

    Supra...

Have an older '85 2.8l model Supra which I am 'doing-up' for my grandson when he gets his licence... it has some rust in top of rear panels, and very dated striped cloth upholstery (which I am spray-dyeing overall one color); it also overheats quite easily (working on that when I finish re-spraying the Zed), but it goooees like the clappers (non-turbo)!!
So, I can understand why the 1J and 2J motors are so well thought of (mine is the old 5-whatever). Also handles well and rides well and seats are quite comfortable and adjustable. The old model shape has always been a favourite of mine (not keen on the 'rounded' shape of current models) but the Zed is in a different class as far as looks are concerned. Just a pity we have so many on-going things go wrong with the V6 and so difficult to work on!! (Keep thinking about a V8 conversion....:) ).

The TT's at the time where about $40,000 and the NA's between $16,000 for hail damaged ones to $25,000 for an aerotop auto. I got my NA Z for $13,000, was a pretty easy desecion

They do seem to be pretty rare, but there was 3-4 for sale at any one time.

i drive a TT supra often, 7 psi with a cat back and blitz sus pod filter, gf owns it and she also owns a 300zx running 7 psi with a catback and a blitz sus pod filter whih i gave to her off my 300zx.

dragged the supra and the 300zx, same mods same psi and the 300zx RAPED the supra.. that smaller turbo it runs is pure bullshit, utterally useless for drags only good for putting around town.

i got rid of the sequential setup on the supra to see how it would behave with same parralell setup as th e zed and it was ugly and really laggy.. yuck.. jumped back in the zed and had a smile from ear to ear.. the supra just makes u feel like a lebo.. something wrong with it.. cant pick it.. just.. wrong.

The 300 was running 7 psi? Why was that? Sounds like safety boost, should be 9 stock.

It's funny Clarkson really doesn't like Porsches even the latest ones. I'm still to drive a Boxster (think might rent one to get this experience). A Boxster was/might still be on my list of cars to own especially as they get down around $40k or less. But not big on open roofed cars with the sun beating down.

So sneezing or not it's pretty hard to go against the 928/300ZX layout. Stupid Jeremy.
Getting back on pt, my last car before the 300ZX TT was a 928 Porsche. The 300ZX dash and centre part of the dash sweeping down to the gearshift and console was almost a direct copy of the 928. In fact it worried me that the Nissan would constantly remind me of the 928. But the Nissans a lot more fun and a lot lighter in control and feel than the Porsche. But very similar with the instrument pods etc.

Whether Porcshe sneezed or not, it's pretty hard to go against the 928/300ZX or most moden Porsche dash layouts. Really Jeremy you are a tosser at times.
