Single Turbo VG Build

    I have a build I'm doing for a customer in NH that is running a Comp Turbo CT43-7475 Billet. Thing is QUITE large. Anyways, he's employed me to build him the shortblock first then proceed with his cylinder heads. So far I've been busy altering his crankshaft, connecting rods, coating all sorts of parts and getting things prepped. Here are a few pics of the work done so far. The crank is just being modified right now but will be coated once done.

    I assume the coating on the rods is to ditch the oil from the surface? (and therefore reduce the effective weight of the rod)

    The coating is an anti oil shedding compound that also disperses heat away from the part. Its a dual action coating thats been applied. Helps reduce parasitic drag on the rotating assembly and release heat off the parts more rapid and evenly.

    Hey mate,

    How common is this practice? I've noticed in all your builds you use you do some sort of coating. Frankly before you I never knew about it. How effective is it really? Been curious about doing it for my rebuild but I have no idea who would offer the service over here.

    Hey Tech@EPR Curious about your coatings?
    I have seen hard anodising done to pistons , Both before and after it has been run , with good results.

    This coating your using reminds me of something called molycoat that used to be sprayed on reground camshafts?

    Do you have any pic's of coated pistons/ bearings after they have been used?

    Everything I build for customers has coated working parts in it. Friction reduction, improved performance and prolonging the life span of parts is a win/win situation for anyone. But like anything else it costs to have these processes done to ones assembly and you need to weigh your options on how far you want to take your build and what direction it must go in.

    The coatings are VERY effective on any level of performance. From the basic build to the wild and crazy. Any engine can benefit in having these coatings applied.

    There are a few different anodizing processes on the market. The newest and best performing so far is one that called Diamondyze which is a hard ceramic anodizing which to date has had zero effects from detonation abuse under testing. More tests are still be run but to date its proven to be the best thing to stand up against detonation.

    Moly coat on the cams you speak of is just a break in coating that most do to ensure the regrinds aren't flattened upon start up with improper break ins.

    The only images I have of my coated parts after a dynamic session is of a bearing set that I posted in the tech section a few months ago.

    My new shop is 2000sqft...my garage...only two car.....lol yea this new shop is quite a bit bigger.

    Well I finally had got wind from my customer a few weeks ago to go forward and finish his block out. Build to the customers timeline but here is his final build off.

    After I spent 20+ hours blending and hand forming his crankshaft to what you see above I did some fine tuning to the crank in the blast cabinet to surface prep it for another stage of work.

    After it was all coated I removed all the masking and cured it in the oven. Man what a beautiful turn out. I am VERY impressed with the finish this crank has.

    but what I dont see is the results of all these engines being built

    any customers have their cars dynoed?

    any sheets available to see the power curve ?

    last build made 673rwhp at 32psi on 2530s

    Another made 550rwhp on Z1 600 Kit (dont know parameters on boost pressures etc etc

    Others are out there running and running well but I can't make anyone go get their Z tuned and report back.

    I have another being dyno'd this weekend in California.

    Just because the builds are shown and never talked about after that doesn't mean they don't make power or aren't running. We all could sit and ponder and be in wonder but from my point of view on things is that "no news is good news" and I continuously contact those customers with builds to ensure things are running properly. No issues or mechanical failures to date. All have had nothing but good things to report with the setups they are running. Guess we'll all have to wait.

    not being negative towards your work .

    I'm more curious about seeing the power curve on the dyno sheet .

    peak power results are to impress little boys and good for business sales.

    want to see spool up and where max boost is reached,torque curve etc
    that tells me more about the engine (heads) than some peak horsepower result


    so if you can put up some dynos especially with gt28rs or hks2530 would be great.
