Decided to do a build thread since it seems to be what all the cool kids are doing these days. This will be a slow build since it's my daily so don't expect it to get exciting too quickly. Last year I bought Mitch's zed off him, a 1993 2+0 na slicktop converted to 5sp manual. I'd wanted a slicktop for a long time and had started looking for a cheap project after selling my last zed (a 2+0 na targa which I still miss to this day).

Got her just the way I wanted with all bodywork and maintenance done when I made the decision to let her go :( Live and learn. Still hear from the new owner occasionally, sounds like it's in pretty good hands.

Mitch's car had more than what I wanted (manual, series 2, leather and cruise control). Unfortunately it's silver, probably my least favourite colour. I managed to look past that and picked it up while I was in NSW while making my annual trip south to Mt. Panorama to watch the V8's with my old man. I was slightly worried about taking it up the mountain that weekend (understandably, since Nissan isn't exactly the most popular brand on the top of the mountain) though surprisingly I got nothing but compliments all weekend. After picking it up, I drove from Newcastle to Sydney to Bathurst, then back to Rockhampton (around 2000kms in a week).

The engine had been making a noise since I got it, and nobody could really pinpoint what was wrong. Turned out the hydraulic timing belt tensioner had completely failed, causing the t-belt to flap about and vibrate making lots of noise since it had almost no tension on it. Quite surprised it hadn't jumped a tooth actually. Looked and sounded like this which was hilarious to see in real life after I'd been sitting on around 3000rpm for hours on end driving up the east coast of Australia just weeks before. Replaced the timing belt tensioner and she runs sweet as now.

By this point I'd started tidying it up for roadworthy. Replaced steering rack boots, rear main seal, rear tyres and fixed an exhaust leak. Had an issue with the clutch where the clutch disc actually seized to the flywheel. Ended up pulling the box to diagnose this, and found from the part number it had an Exedy oem replacement Isuzu light truck clutch disc in it. Decided to pull the gearbox apart with a mechanic friend while it was out and found it was in reasonably good condition for it's age (although reverse was a bit worn). Ended up dropping the box 3 times all up to fix a leak from the front of the box, my fault for not reading the service manual properly and not gooing the bottom 3 bolts of the front cover in. Replaced a leaking master cylinder, fitted a new slave cylinder, braided one piece clutch line, gearbox mount, 350z clutch fork and pivot ball while I was there too. Also fitted a Z1 short shifter which, i was fairly unimpressed with at first when I had my nismo shift knob on it. Replaced that with a stock one and now it's absolutely magical. Shifts are nice and tight and just feels right.

Got it registered and been driving it ever since. Little bit thirsty on the highway at 9.4L/100km but I'm putting this down to the lightweight flywheel. Cruise control seems to struggle with it a bit on the hills so will replace it with a stock one eventually. Coolant temps hold steady at 84 degrees even in 30+ degree Qld heat with an underdrive pulley. Need to do something about the aircon sooner rather than later though

Plans for the near future are to get it back up to scratch and replace all the 20yo. worn out bits and pieces. I want to get some kyb gr2 shocks and eibach springs, front camber spacers, nismo tension rod bushes and new upper control arms. Eventually would like powertrix front and rear strut braces and some fender braces too. Brakes also need some attention, going to get some stock TT calipers rebuilt, some hel braided brake lines, centric slotted rotors and qfm hpx pads.

She's a bit rough around the edges, but at the end of the day she's mine. Got some big plans for the future as time/money permits. :zlove::zlove::zlove:

Haven't done much in the way of mods, rain stopped outside for a little bit though so I went and grabbed a few photos.

One of the first things I did was fit an ipod/bluetooth head unit and a cheap sub. Also fitted new shift boots and the shifter out of my aus spec with my Z1 short shifter.

Got some led's from rob and fitted them along with some black Z1 gauge rings, really updates the look of the dash.

4300k hid's, nismo side indicators and 2k front emblem were all must do's. Thinking about going up to 6000k, don't know if I like the 4300k's as much as I thought I would.

Also got my gza titanium key cut, was a bit worried since the kid who cut it was like 16 or something but he had no issues and it works brilliantly!

First thing I did as soon as I got it :zlove:

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Auto's great if you want to play with your vagina with your spare hand while you drive.

Maybe it's a good thing you two won't be in a room together at zedfest...

What a heap of crap :p

I'm glad you're doing more with it than I could be bothered to...
It came to the point where I had 2 zeds and decided to put my effort into the faster one, despite the fact that the S2 slicktop was a more desirable vehicle. Good to see you have some solid plans.
