All my cylinders except 1 rank 160 - 170 on my TT. That one reads about 10, the measurement is not improved by pouring oil down the spark plug hole. We think it's a piston ring, or a hole in the piston. I know we won't know for sure until we do pull it all out, but any opinions on what I should do in terms of a rebuild? Money is kind of tight so I don't want to go full balls with it.

Depends on how cheap you wanna go.

Swap out, or get an inspection camera in the hole check the bores. Swap out the single piston with a known good one. - this would be the cheapest $ wise.

I had a Vg30DETT that had a hole in the piston, smoked so bad.

I did try that, it was pretty difficult to see anything though.

I have found that if you put the piston to the bottom of its travel its easiest to see.

i would go to you local electronics store and buy a camera that plug into a laptop. suirt some oil in the spark plug hole and have a look with the camera. broken ring and the oil will dissapear pretty quick, should be able to see a hole in the piston. some of the camera will actually see the top ring if you can get along the edge of the bore.
