I called up Hardy Spincer, regarding a one piece tailsharft last week and according to their records they don't have information on TS length for my configuration. I'm aware there are several forum members who engaged Hardy Spincer to have their one piece tailsharfts made but unfortunately none were are 2 seater TT manual configuration. Therefore I would have to leave my car at the mechanics across the road for a couple of days for them to take measurements, have the tailsharft made and then fitted, which will be very inconvenient for me as they're located at the opposite end of the city. However, If I provide them with length details they can make it and ship it to my mechanics who are only 100 meter away from my work. Although Search has produced some information on the length of a one piece tailshaft for my configuration, it's not clear between which points these measurements were taken. So my question is does anyone have this information? I've also discovered that as part of the process of fitting a one piece TS it's highly recommended the gearbox mounts be replaced. Also, clocking should be performed to ensure optimal coupling.
How much did they quote you? There are plenty of "off the shelf" alternatives that would save you a headache...
measurement for a 2 seater TT manual is approximately 1150mm or 42.25 inches from the trans case to the flange of diff the actual shaft I measured is from diff flange to centre of front uni is 39 inches or 990mm
Can't help you with measurements John, as my Hardie Spicer T/S was built with a new front yoke and rear uni(both of which are serviceable and replaceable units). TT's have a rear CV joint and Hardie Spicer needed to have the Diff Pinion Shaft Flange so as to machine it to mate-up with the rear uni flange(6 bolt). One of the BEST mods I have had done to my car(several years of daily driving without one hiccup).
I don't think I got that far with them. Yeah off the shelf is what I'd prefer, I also looked at Z1 motorsports but I'm unsure of the freight costs.
I had mine pre-made from measurements. They then proceeded to fit the gearbox end of the drive shaft with the wrong number of splines, and also put a Uni on the end instead of a CV joint. You'd be better off you take the car in and leave it there to avoid such complications
Might be worth asking Z1 Motorsports and even paying for the information if it will save you the headache. With the configuration i have i spoke to a few places and decided the little bit of extra money it would cost to get it shipped was worth it from the US.
Apologies for the hi-jack, but what do one piece tail shaft's do? (For those who might be interested in getting one for themselves)
It transfers drive from the gearbox to the differential. (sorry had to put that in) The Nissan OEM item comes in two pieces, so there are 3 joints (one each end and one in the middle). The joint in the middle needs support, so there is a centre bearing. This centre bearing is encased in a rubber mount, and over time the rubber gets flogged out and the bearing can move around causing vibration. The one piece shaft eliminates the centre joint, therefore the bearing is not required, so it saves on further maintenance on that item in the future. Also, one piece shafts are a little lighter.
I had a quote from this crowd at Moorebank for $1200.00. Bought one from Z1 for around $600.00 shipped. It's a good product too!
Hmm, i can feel the itch to get a single peice tail shaft soon too. $550 seems pretty good. As long as there are no fitment hastles.
thoughts on the aluminium ones from Z1? Has any one got any experience with the 1 piece aluminium ones? all the benefits of a 1 piece with a bigger weight reduction.
