Hey Guys, I need assistance with an engine oil recommendation. I am usually a Penrite fan with just a semi synthetic 15w-40 however I was wondering if there was anything else out there on the market which you guys have noticed from previous experience works a treat.

I have a VG30DE with around 330,000k on the clock and it is used for everyday purposes. Still preforms well with no leaks and stabalises good oil pressure.

Any recommendations would be great and highly appreciated. :D

Nothing wrong with what you are using

Maybe 20w/50 with that many km .

Frequent oil changes is more important than brand

Fully synthetics usually come in 10w - Nissan does recommend 10W in the service manual but I guess that is when it is straight from the factory. After 23 years of wear and tear I though it would be logical to go higher and from what I've seen 15W only comes in semi synthetic.

    I may be wrong

Just stick with semi synthetic. Like Black Beast said, you could switch to 20w50 with the amount of KM your car's done. :)

10W, really? Is that for Australian climate? I was always under the impression it was 15W. I wouldn't run a 10W in a Z that hadn't been rebuilt with tighter tolerances than factory, personally... Think I ran a 10W Synthetic at one stage in my old Z and the first thing that struck me was how noisy it was.
I wouldn't be afraid to run a 20W with the kilometres anyway, I'm no mechanic, just my 2 cents from my experiences.

What is the benefit in running synthetic oil?

When considering multigrade oils, say a 15-40.
You have a 40w oil the BEHAVES like a 15w oil when cold.

    10W-40 means following.

10W indicates that the oil meets the cold cranking and cold pumping criteria for a SAE 10 grade oil. The lower the cold cranking and cold pumping SAE grade the better, the oil will always be much thicker at cold start up than it is at operating temperature (100°C).

40 indicates that the oil meets the 100 °C (operating temperature) kinematic viscosity range for a SAE 40 grade oil. This should be within the engine manufacturers recommended 100 °C SAE grade which is 40 to 50.

A 0W-50 oil will have the same viscosity range as a 20W-50 oil at operating temperature (100 °C). However the 0W-50 oil will flow/lubricate better at start up than the 20W-50 oil.

Thanks guys, I already knew the concept of hot / cold viscositys.

What I meant was that I struggled to find a fully synthetic 15W-40.

Penrite do have a full synthetic 15W-60 which I used a couple of services back however I felt with the higher viscosity at full operating temp that my engine was just not like it used to be on a lower viscosity oils at full operating temp. That is why I landed back on the semi synthetic 15W-40 from Penrite.

I might give the following a try -

    Cheers guys!

Motul is very good, I have had that on occasion and pay about $50 a bottle from autobahn when its on special. Buy 4 or 5 bottles

IMO Moble one is over priced. Castrol edge is good also and does come on special quite often,

Wierd part about the castrol and mobil one, is the thicker viscosities always seem more expensive. I refuse to use 5w40 in the car. It needs 10W40 or 15W40.

Running ELF oil at the moment, fully synthetic, was expensive but our cars only take in a bit over 4 litres (not 8~10+ like many of the modern European cars), seems to be going really smoothly on it. Will check the W rating later.

Using Penrite HPR 10W-50 here since going to TT, full syn too. Whilst was n/a I used Shell helix 15W40 for about 4 years semi-syn dropped it every 5000km never had a problem.

Why do you want a thicker oil for cold starting?

At operating temperature all the above oils have the same SAE grade viscosity range. When cold the 5W oil is still thicker than a SAE 40 grade oil at operating temperature.

    At 100 °C a SAE 40 grade oil has a cSt range of 12.5-16.9
    At 40 °C a 5W grade oil has a cSt range of 28.8-35.2.
