    Hey guys,

my water pump is gone I think, there is coolant water leaking from the front of the engine, I asked a local mechanic, he said it sounds like the water pump is gone. He said to me while its in for repair why not get everything else that needs to be fixed, fixed. The only problem is I am not even sure if it really is the water pump, if it is, can anyone help me out here and suggest what else needs to be replaced while I drop it off at the mechanics? (also if someone knows someone who can do it for cheap as I am a uni student and my financial status isn't exactly flash:( ) Any help would be much appreciated...

    Kind regards,

    Reggie

hmmm, i'll be completely honest with you, I have no idea about the mechanical component of cars, but could the thermostat actually cause the leakage?

    no the thermostat is inside,

If it is the waterpump then there is a small hole on the top of the w/pump shaft, you should see it leaking from there.?

bummer man, has your car had the 100k service yet, if your water pump is dead id say no. thats one of the components that is changed. get a 100k kit from the K-zed and do the 100 mate,

If it is the water pump (and that's likely), depending on how near the 100,000 k service is, the labour cost between replacing the water pump and a full 100,000 service is not great. This is because, basically, you need to remove the radiator, front engine covers, belts etc to get to the water pump. e.g. take the bits at the front of the motor off. You're looking at (my guess) $600+ in labour plus parts.

btw - water pump may have failed because it was not replaced in last 100,000 service (that was my experience).

btw also - If it is the thermostat then not much different to pump as it's beside/inside it/nearby, and you still have to take the front bits of the motor off.

btw also also - K-ZED (I think) sells 100,000 kits at a competitive price.

Hope yours is a simple failed hose.

    Cheers,

    Peter

Theres a very good chance it could be one of the 2 short hoses on the water outlet pipe. If it is the water pump, dont let the mechanic put in anything other than a genuine nissan one.

Does anyone know any "honest" mechanics in sydney, (glenwood/norwest area preferably) who could help identify the exact problem with my car...reason I am asking for someone close by is because I can not drive her to anyone as it is leaking water and last thing I need is for the engine to sieze:) if anyone could help that would be great.

    Kind regards,

    Reg

might be some close by memebers whom are knowledgable willing to help you out matie.

yes the thermostat can leak, hole in the gasket, im willing to go with a hole in a pipe, if u wanna check, fill up ur radiator n overflow with str8 water, run the car see how long for it to go out, then refil, do this to enable you to find the holey tube, unless of course it is the waterpump..

    Where to go for diagnosis

Your nearest mechanical workshop or radiator repairer will have a cooling system pressure tester, you could even call a mobile mechanic to test ... it's easy as, and cheap!

If water pump seal is knackered, coolant leaks out a drain hole near the bearing. The thermostat bypass hoses may also have sprung a leak - usually due to corrosion to steel connectors or alloy bypass pipes.

    BTW is Glenwood near Penrith?

    Location of Glenwood

Glenwood is right next to Parklea Markets, i suppose its in the middle of Blacktown and Castle hill, near Quakers Hill even, up the road from Belavista...

i had coolant leaking a month or so ago

it was the water pump, but it took a while to figure out where the leaking was comign from. i would personally recommend NOT going to a pro as its a pretty easy job, just offer someone on the forums a carton or so to help u... the only way to learn shit about these beasts is if you fix them yourselves, and it will save you heaps and heaps of money to spend on bigger turbos :)

(if its the water pump, there is also a drain hole on the bottom of the shaft)

what i did was to remove the rad, fan n all that shit, then pulled the top coolant hose, and drained the coolant to that level in the system, then if the leak persisted, i knew it wasnt anywhere at that height in the cooling system. then i removed the bottom hose, it still leaked, that told me, the leak was below that level. if its not coming from those hoses, and its at the front of the car, its pretty much either your thermostat or water pump

just also make sure it isnt ur radiator thats sprung a leak...

    Re Water Pump hole

Sorry Zorro but that is not necessarily so. I thought as you did that the hole at the top of the water pump was there to indicate a water leak. When my car started leaking coolant I couldn't see where it was coming from but when I took it all apart I found that the water pump (original) had a drain hole underneath as well!! And that is where the coolant was leaking from. Water pump was not replaced at 100,100km and went at 156,000km.
