recently i've found out that my entire stock cat back exhaust system has been "rusted" and that my stock mufflers have holes in them.

thus, making me now use my funds for that instead of my precious 100k service

    So i went to a mechanic today, near fairfield;
(side note: Spotted a black 300zx with plates i think XZ 300? )

and was told that for them to replace the cat-back exhaust system, it'd cost $680 with sport mufflers, Mild Steel, this includes labour.

So now im asking others about what i should do,
    should i get this done?
can anyone recommend a better place? (this guy didn't seem to friendly).

I'm scared of LOUD DRONING NOISES, because my damaged stock exhaust system was already loud (Even the mechanic thought i already had a sports system at first because of the noise)

Should i still go for the sport mufflers? are there any such things as Silent Sport Mufflers? I want something to look pretty on my car :)

I also asked the guy, that if the sport mufflers were too loud, would they change the muffler, he replied saying it'd cost me $60.

    I'm SO INDECISIVE,
    please comment!

exhaust cement is your friend

nah mate, maybe you should consider this, not only as a repair, but as a upgrade. got a high flowed sports zorst turbo backed?

IMO, GET THE 100k SERVICE DONE.

Yes, I was shouting. This is the most important thing. Get it done, and if the cops pull you over for the exhaust, just explain to them that you had to spend the money on the 100k service and that the exhaust will be replaced soon. Don't go spending money on an exhaust system when the expense of the timing belt going wrong being so much more expensive.

I recently had my exhaust done....

one of my rear mufflers broke so I needed some exhaust work. Basically I told the guy that I wanted something good quality, with a nice note but not ridiculously loud. He basically replaced the entire cat back section with 2.5 inch stainless steel tubing (mandrel bends), 2 hotdogs and then 2 big oval stainless steel mufflers with chrome tips. He also kept my old X-pipe. The exhaust is all stright through, not too loud and not drony when cruising. But if you step on the gas hard, it growls. All up it set me back $1850. Each of those oval mufflers was $700.

    Just had mine done

Cost me $1150 for 2 new cats, 2 mufflers + tips, new 2.25" piping and 2 hot dogs + labour.

Sounded like a droning biplane when they gave it to me and found the problem to be that they had removed the stock H-pipe

I went back and they put 2 more hot dog resonators in and it is still too loud, but much better. Will just some silencers put in and see how I go.

Very good service from the guys at Mettams Mufflers in Morley. Looked after me the whole way and didn't charge any extra to put the extra hot dogs in :)

    Cheers

the thing about the place i went to is that they

said that they'd charge me $60 labour to change the mufflers if it were too loud.

this may be an opportunity to be an upgrade, but i still wanna save money so i do my 100k service, within this month sometime.

so im guessing theres no such thing as silent affordable mufflers aye?

i want my car to sound like what Jedi describe
but i simply just dont have the funds

    any other ideas?
    recommendations?

    Your car is not >>

going to shite itself if it runs over the 100,000 by a thousand or two.
But if you drive it with a defective exhaust system, Mr Plod will book you & it will cost you a lot more in fines, cause then he's goner go over it with a fine toothed comb, plus its not going to run like a fine tuned machine with all these holes in the exhaust.
The price of the exhaust replacement is very good, considering it includes labour.
In essence, a week or two won't hurt, till the 100,000 service.

Have to dis-agree with Keza, considering we don't really know

what sort of mileage has been done, then again I could agree for the same reason. Unless you know the full history of a car a timing kit pretty well first up would be good advice. A friend of mine up in Central Qld took his Saab V6 to the dealer in Mackay for it's 60k service, when he picked it up he noticed they hadn't changed the timing belt as required ( and requested). They didn't have the parts and said they would do it next service. A little later ( same day) he was stuck betwwen Mackay and Middlemount( like the middle of no-where) with a totally destroyed engine. That cost Saab a fortune

true, his car could allready be at 120 000 klms, and he might not be able to afford the 100 000k service for another 2-3 months. depends alot on his financial situation.

    Re: about my financial situation!

if the exhaust repair is going to be at $680 it'd probaly set my 100k service back about a couple of weeks, or more.

car odometer says 107,000km, but you can never be too sure.

    appreciate the advice guys.

your sure of this? considering its only being made from mild steel without mandrel bending?
this comes with a pair of sport mufflers though.

    again, thanks for the advice.

hope the mufflers don't give me a loud drone, or i'm going to have to go with 'hotdogs' with tips.

khoi... if the 100kkm is to be set back by 2-4 weeks, you really do not

have a major issue .. you can bet the speedo reading is way out .. do the exhaust system .. and pick up the 100kkm service asap...

I'm sure that its a good price. You can pay that much for just One Muffler in some circles.
Consider this, a mechanic will charge about $80-90 per hour, allow at least an hour or a bit more.
The cost of the tubing, bending & fitting of mufflers, plus the cost of the mufflers, flanges & assorted bolts & clamps to secure the exhaust.
    It soon adds up.
Most people with Sports Exhausts, 2.5 - 3" will tell you that it can cost upwards of $1200 from the dumps back, plus a probable replacement of the Cats, then even more if you go for Stainless Steel right through to the tail pipes.
Not knowing what milage was/is on your vehicle, & knowing that most imports have been suspected of being wound back a bit, I suggested that you might get away with another couple of weeks before the 100,000 service. When it comes down to it, its your choice which you decide to do first. But be assured, that the Plods will definately book/fine you for a defected exhaust, one that leaks, if you are unlucky enough to be stopped by them & that can be a lot more expensive in the long term.
    IMHO.
