Need help from someone in Melbourne

I'm in need of a one piece tailshaft for this week coming. I was going to try and get one made from Jeff Lagerway in Ferntree Gully.

Jeff says he would really need to take a few measurements from the same/similar model 300zx. ( '89 j-spec 2+2 twin turbo )

He does the work from his home workshop at 73 Bursaria Ave. Ferntree Gully somewhere in Melbourne I guess.

Can anyone with a similar zx to mine help me by dropping in to see him for 15mins?

I'm willing to throw in $30 for a carton to whoever helps me out.

    Thanks guys.

Dam, soz mate I've got a 2+2 NA....not TT. Maybe try browsing some Vic events and browse some user garage's and PM people with your car specs?

    Cheers, Andrew

Why does it have to be from a TT? Dont the 2+2 NA and TT have the same size tail shaft anyways? Or could it be that the TT is thicker then the NA?

Not sure of the differences but I think you may be right about the thickness.

Also forgot to mention that mine is an Auto. ( Kinda important for the measurements.)

Thanks kr4usy ;) Good idea. Just had a look through and the majority of TT's have manual gearboxes. Except for Hyper101 :D

    Hyper are you reading this?

I think maybe I will have to just replace the center bearing for the while, and allow some more time to organise the 1 piece shaft.
I'm not expecting anyone to be able to help much on such short notice but maybe work on it for next month some time.

Picked up my one-piece from Jeff today, and he showed me a TT shaft (2-str only) and it looks quite different... connection to the diff end looks like a CV rather than a uni, so there may be different lengths between body equivalent TT's and NA's, and of course between auto's and manuals'. In the course of our discussions, Jeff said there were 29 different configurations (seems too many, I can only come up with 8)

Just out of curiosity, Doug, how much did your 1 piece cost and how long did it take to get made up and fitted?

Dropped the two-piece in on Wednesday last and picked both up today, but I'd told him there was no rush... he can pretty much do one "while-you-wait" if he has the dimensions and parts, and you make prior arrangements. The car is still at Wallards, because they want to refit and test with the original shaft in to see if that vibration is now cured (Fingers crossed). Then they will fit the one-piece.
I told Jeff I wanted to do a bit of drag racing so he's used heavy duty Falcon universals front and rear.
Overall cost was $380, including balancing the two piece (which, incidentally, WAS out of balance, even tho' the other guy it had been sent to had rebalanced it 3 times).

Edit: Jeff no longer removes and refits tailshafts... he doesn't have a hoist.

This is one of my future to-do jobs...thanks Doug, think I know who I'll go too ;) Is this the same guy who supposedly supplies Nissport?

    Your car is a J-spec isn't it?

That would mean I can't just call him and say "I'll have what he's having" to get one made for my Aus-spec can I?

    Aus-spec auto, Peter!

Andrew, I think Sandeep said something to that effect (ie supplies to Nissport) in a different thread.

Sorry about the thread hijack, Jasonic!

about 12-18 months ago, i thought that there was a

thread (dinoz or bluez ??) which provided a range if sizes/dimemsions of tailshafts ... search may throw it up ..???

    lol No prob Red ;)

Was thinking if he hasn't got the hoist he's going to find it hard to do any measuring anyway. Might just have to send down my 2 piece and let him work with that.

I spoke to Jeff about freight and he wouldn't expect it to cost more than $40 one way for each tailshaft. So sending mine down and getting 2 back might cost me $120

Maybe if there are others with Auto TT's that want a 1 piece we can split the cost of sending and returning my original 2 piece (approx $80 ) and they get their new tailshaft without the hassle?

This would no doubt suit any other interstate people as well.

    Any interest?

Ive had an idea! (How strange!)
I think I will contact Jeff again and find out EXACTLY what dimensions he needs to build a tailshaft, sight unseen, for a particular vehicle, in our case, the Zed. Then, fellow Zedders willing, get a selection of Zeds together for a day of measuring, and provide these measurements to him. Together with the list that Black Baz has mentioned, this should give ALL of us access to the cheapest one-piece shafts in Australia (my guess, average price $300, depending on application (car and proposed usage)).
Assuming Jeff is agreeable and the idea is feasible, I'll need access to 8 different cars... 2+0/NA/Man, 2+0/NA/Auto, 2+0/TT/man, 2+0/TT/Auto, 2+2/NA/Man, etc.

Edit: just did the search suggested by BB, and the result from DinoZ's thread won't be of much help.

    Sounds good to me Red.

Had a search for the thread BlackBaz mentioned but couldn't find it. May have missed it hidden in the 15 pages of 'tailshaft' threads.

A diagram of the measurements Jeff needs would be easier than him telling me over the phone so once you have these I can post the specs from mine when I drop it out on Monday.

That sounds like a good idea, I have a 2+2 manual NA you are welcome to use.

If i didnt use my car as a daily driver i would take my tail shaft out as i have an auto TT 2+2 but i need it for work etc...

If you'd specified the suggested authors, there were only 5-6 threads, but I think this is the one Black Baz had in mind
    http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=252732&highlight=tailshaft
    and the particular post
    http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?p=443478#poststop
Given that the thread was about a fitting problem... from what I could deduce, it was related to the housing for the rear CV on the diff of a TT and the flange on the tailshaft itself which seems to be more for an NA, it's not of much use.
Some fresh measurements are in order methinks!
Whatever, I'll contact Jeff! If this works out, all you'll need to do is specify what car variant you have, and the projected use.

Expect a "Tech Day" announcement in "Coming Events", coming to an address near you! :)
Hopefully, we'll be able to get the necessary measurements WITHOUT removing the shafts! (Ramps and axle stands)
