hey guys, currently considering purchasing a 300zx, was wondering what i should expect to pay maintaining the bugger?
What have your experiences been with the 100k service? did it cost an arm and a leg? what about just minor things?

    thanks!

Hey mate, welcome to the forum, maintenance costs can be high, it depends on a lot of things, a lot of the guys on here do the minor servicing themselves so that cuts the cost a bit, 100k service is expensive(Starts at around $1500) and you need to be sure it is done right, if you look after the car it will look after you, same as with any car, noted that you are in sydney, why dont you come along to the tech day on this saturday, will give you a bit of a feel for the z32

lol, yeah im much the same actually now that i think about it a bit more but i bought a very poorly looked after one, make sure you have a look at the guide to buying a zed in the tech section, so you can be sure your getting a good one, otherwise it will suck the life out of you and your wallet

    Edit

    1k Plen pull
    1.5k Service
    700 Rear main seal
    100 radiator service
    300 Brake pads
2k got ****** around by dodgy mechanics and thats what it cost for them to look at my car which i ended up fixing myself in 45 mins
Have done bits and pieces here and there aswel such as changed silicone hoses, replaced fuel lines, spark plugs, electrical connectors, have also spent a shitload on mods but some of them were to replace broken stock parts and ended up not costing much more than the stock stuff

Mine is usually around the $600 mark each year...but I think I had a good year last year and didn't repair anything

the reliability of the older zeds (like my one) is not that good but that?s because my car is 17 years old but you would get the simular problems with any car of a simular lever and age (i.e. skyline, Silvia) the only thing that I have found makes the zed more expensive is the labour as it takes longer to do any amount of work 2 the car

The secret is to keep out of the hands of the wrong specialists. If you can find a specialist or a mechanic whose systematic that's half the battle. And to find a car in pretty good condition to start with.

I find the biggest problem with the Z32

is the amount of aftermarket bits and pieces and BLING accessories that are available.
Once you get the bug, it's hard to stop.
You often find yourself spending money where it's not necessary, but none the less it's satisfying when you open the bonnet and another shiny bit winks back at you ;)

    F@#k All

My Zed (before she was stolen) cost me about $400 for one years maintenance. A breakdown of the maintenance costs:

Around $140 to purchase apexi high flow air filter

Around $260 for service inc remove stock air box & fit apexi pod filter, clean throttle bodies and tighten intake hoses, replace fuel filter, replace oil filter and oil with good quality stynthetic oil, adjust base timing, reset ecu. Done by ZRATED.

Only had one service as my Z got stolen before I could clock up 10,000km

So really could have been $260 if I hadnt gone the apexi.

By the way, was a non turbo

most Z's that people buy have been neglected over the years this is what contributes to the huge blowout on costs just after you buy a Z, they are usually in excess of 15 years old, having said that, once you get all necessary maintenance jobs done, they run very smoothly, then it is only ongoing normal maintenance and any performance or looks upgrades you may wish to do, i have spent more than my car cost initially, getting it right, although nearly 75% of that in reality was unnecessary to the basic running of the car, but now it's sweet

SSHHHHH greg, dont mention any of that bling yet...let the guy enjoy his Z for a while before he gets the bug and becomes broke like the rest of us buying up all the bling!!! haha :p ;)

oh yeh the mechanic!!! make sure u get yourself a trustworthy Z specialist...or anyone who works on sport/import cars who know exactly what they are doing etc....

dont take it to any random mechanic...trust me, i know!! ;)

You must have been one of the lucky ones!!! I have owned my '90 TT for about 2.5 years and spent way more than the actual cost of the car in repairs and a few mods. The only reason i've kept it is because i caught the Zed love bug. From my experience this is the best advice i can give:
    1. You MUST find an excellent mechanic who knows 300's well and will not f*** you around, this is probably the most important thing if you don't plan to do much maintenance work yourself.
    2. Get your Zed inspected before buying it
    3. Don't buy a TT if you can't afford or don't want to spend much money on repairs

You never know what you've actually got till you get it home, I have spent about 1k in the last 3 weeks and have only had it 3 weeks, as has been mentioned previously, its usually the quality of the previous work thats the problem.

But its a magnificent car to drive, and with all the info on this site nothing is out of reach... do the majority of the work yourself. I rewired the whole PTU & coil pack system myself. without this site I would not have had a clue..

You'll love it, and there worth the money..

    spent $2500 in 2 weeks

well, like lot of people know, i'm looking to trade my car.
but i cant trade my Z of there are some problemes.

so i had to replace the master cylinder because i had a leak
change the clutch and brake fluid
changed the muffler (started losing some stuff from the muffler)
changed the exhaust line (i had a small hole underneath that became more and more big)
    changed the fuel pomp

it cost me at all $2500, i didnt have my car for 1 week and i had have to go to work by catching the bus.

but fortunately now the car is ready to trade

the most expensive is not the part, its the labor ...
need a lot of hour labors because everything is compacted, so when u need to change something, u have to remove the whole engine, bumper, etc ......

    Not really

If you spend the money up front when you import the zed to do all the things right it will give you many years happy motoring. Other then the rear main seal that went,a new set of O2's and general servicing I've had no real issues with the TT. I've even got two years of RAC letters stating congradulations on not being one of the 10 billion people with a break down each year :D

    lots

ive spent 20g plus in the last 12 mths and i havent driven it but i have up graded one or 2 things :p:zlove: the answer to your queston is more than the average car due to labor costs but it all depends on the condition of the z
