Yes Dave, like a really long Extended tab that folds forward and extends to the front so it can be used to position the nut.
I was trying to describe something like that.

So next time you are bored.
If you make a jig. Actually you just need a spare alternator and some magnets to hold the rod and Nut in the right position for welding.

Found this exact same problem on another guys zed today. Couldn't remember that there is supposed to be a nut on the other end. The only advice I could give him was that the thread on the bolt is screwed.

That was after loosening it off and stuffing around with it whilst under the car for about 20 minutes. :(

It takes 10 minutes to remove shroud and radiator then it real easy, a little longer on a TT.
Yes you will have to drain radiator and waste inhibitor, this is a few dollars to renew but you will save yourself a lot of heartache, scratches etc.
PS. You would never describe my hands as being girly

Martin is right, but you need to have the part and inhibitor standing by.

This part is listed as just a few dollars on US websites.
I still like the idea discussed with TT Dave. Welding a bit of rod to a nut is something he already does for similar situations with other machines. If the rod extended to the front you could use it to position the nut and wouldn't have to destroy your hand or even take the front off the car.

    I just did this

my nut doesn't have the tab

after taking the radiator out .

I I cut my sidchrome ring spanner to 3/4 length (removing the bend on opposite side ) and fit it on the nut from under the car ..and tightened a socket from the front .
I have welded intakes on my turbos so too tight for access behind powersteering pump..

    great job to do

Thanks for the advice, Martin and BB are obviously correct when they advise that this is a radiator out job, to position the nut.

I really like TT Dave's idea, but ended up finding a push-on/screw off plastic nut that I was able to push on with a long bamboo stick. I will keep checking if it stays on.

Still like TT Dave's proven to work idea.
