hey had a search around and couldn't really find anything regarding this

several insurer's i've looked at have a clause stating they can refuse to pay out should the car not be considered roadworthy, now does this mean that potentially if the car has a pod filter they could refuse to pay up since its defectable (in nsw)?

likewise with bigger rims, or a very loud exhaust?

    Pretty standard clause

Most have disclaimer clause(s) for things like un-roadworthy or illegal mods or you were convicted of drink-driving when accident happened or they didn't know it was a j-spec private import etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc:rolleyes:

Reminds me: I've gotta investigate why my $360PA full comprehensive for my '90 J-spec TT manual with Torque Lumley has risen by 190% since last year:mad:

The imported bit always annoys me:mad: Getting 17 year old Jap Z bits is just as easy as getting 17 year old Aus Z bits

After my fence 'incident' they hardly looked at the car, just the damage. My car was not exactly stock (without there knowledge), SAFC, pod, 'dodgy' cats U/D pulley etc. They couldn't care less. The girl on the phone said that they couldn't hold it against me that I admitted to speeding considerably before my crash because I was not charged by the cops.

You could probably argue that the mods, wether legal or not did not cause the crash, i.e. my HID's didn't make me drift into a pole so you still have to pay out... Of course if your fancy height adjustable suspension split in half you propbably wouldn't have much of a case.

True... but if the insurer wants to get out

of paying a claim, they usually can ...

What burns me is they will happily take your money year after year and when you go to claim they can dis-allow (for the reasons suggested in last post) the claim saying the contract is invalid but will they refund all your premiums?

whether its ethical or not - that's another question...

my understanding is that they will not cover you if an illegal mod was a direct cause of the crash, for example if you had wheel spacers that caused one of the wheels to sheer off which made you lose control and hit something they will not cover you because an illegal mod caused the accident... could be wrong

    speaking of insurance....

sorry, don't mean to hijack, but speaking of insurance, it seems like the only 2 places that will insure a zed for me (i'm 22 yrs old:( ) are young'n'cool and justcars.

I am currently with just cars, but want to know what other peoples experience is of these 2, including what they are like when it comes time to actually pay out. I know jc is considerably more expensive than y&c, but heard they dont care about light mods. (pod, udp, etc)

    Thanks:)

Don't know what your RWC requirements are as I'm in WA ....

BUT .... tell your insurance company of every modification you have done.

Make sure that ALL the Mods will pass a roadworthy (get this in writing and itemised). Make sure the mods are itemised with your policy and your insurance company agrees to them. Get it in writing via an exchange of letters.

That way if something does happen you are in the clear as you have declared the mods; provided a RWC for them (or engineers report) and have had the Insurance company agree that they WILL NOT void your policy should something happen mechanically etc.

Sure they can always use contract clauses but the KEY one is the clause that says you must declare any mods on your car that are not standard i.e. that the manufacturer offered as an option

    Hope that helps ....

Agree with Chrispy, this has been the case in my experience. My car was wearing a canary when I had an accident and I was still covered and my car was repaired, as the defects did not contribute. This was in Victoria although I can't see it being different in the new Wales as insurance companies are national.

    Your 'loop hole'...

Is a sentence somewhere which reads like 'youve got to tell us everything that affects this policy, to the best of your ability'
Which I take to mean if I dont know that my car isnt stock and i'm not a proffessional mechanic then ignorance is bliss.

And on the topic of insurance...

    Sorry to hijack

What do u think of q quote of $1160/annum for full comprehensive, based on a Z32 N/A, usual mods, 23yr old nil previous defects, on a $12,500 writeoff.

That was justcar.. that a standard sortof price?

mate i had the exact same thing!!! im 20 tho, JC offered me 2400 n young n cool offered me 2900... then a light shined from above the light was called, Famous Classic Car Insurence... 1900 a year! better exess, WAY better payout metho )replaces the CAR not the price ;) alot more leanient i just cant break the law :D easy done!

ring them, tell em what JC offered you, thats what i done! and they smacked a 30% no claim bonus on it!!! rating 3 or 4 not sure, which is just great since i had no previous rating, i was over the moon, 1600 a year less and it only goes down next year. give it a go mate.

as for the mods discussion, if you dont tell them about a mod and they find it on your car, they reserve to right to not pay you out, says it in all the term and conditions, just be honest man.

RACWA insured my 91 Auspec Z 18s and lowered w/alarm & stereo for $15000 cost $750.00 per year that was with full no claim and no claim bonus protection. Had to haggle and argue with them. But have insured all my cars with them over the years. Mind you I'm alot older and have my house and another car with them so thats good leverage when bargaining.

$1160.00 is not too bad. Some of the other specialist insurers put restrictions on the Kms you can do in a year, hence a cheaper rate.

Sounds like Torque might have put the 3 and the 6 around the wrong way?
$695 metro Melbourne with them for me. TT Auto, etc, etc.

    695/360 = 178%?

    Yeah, pretty good...

Mine was $1500ish, 19 year old, rating 4 no crash or traffic offense history. Went up a bit after the fence... $1650, but I'm still in front after the full respray :zlove:

I tried NRMA's 'we'll beat it by 20%' thing, they gave me a quote of over $5000, even the guy on the phone laughed at that...
