Now that I'm feeling a bit better the zed urge is sneeking back.
Next on the list is doing up my heads for zed two. I'll be needing low down power so this is the way to go I reckon.
My plan is to throw the heads off the forged motor into "gargoyle" and use those heads to do up for the forged donk. Reason being they're not been upgraded, only reconditioned.
I already have a set of JWT 400+ cams and was wondering if it's a good idea to stick with JWT's gear or can I use these cams with other brands?
Porting and polishing and oversized valves seem the go. U-beaut springs wouldn't hurt either. Titanium guides too I guess.
So if you were in this idiots thongs, what would you do to your heads?
    Thanks guys.

Im getting my heads from z1 stage 2 with new lifters and there hl-15 cams option bit pricey $3945 but its easy and atleast you know exactly what your getting and comes ready to bolt on don't use a cometic head gasket! i had to do my heads a second time because of a faulty cometic head gasket.

If they are installed properly there are no issues... I'm running cometic fine for last 6 months.

    Hey John,

I'd assume you are chasing stage 3 heads. As per Z1's website, see below for what they offer:

    Z1 HL-15 cam set 270 deg duration .385 lift
Stage 3 Portwork (Considerable material removed from intake and exhaust runners including heavy combustion chamber and bowl work)
    Polished combustion chambers
Intake and Exhaust Valve guides replaced with performance bronze guides
Z1 single coil performance valve springs
    Heads completely cleaned, surfaced
Ferrea 1 mm oversize intake and exhaust performance valves
Z1/ Ferrea Titanium valve spring retainers
High flow radius cut performance valve job
    Valves lapped in
Combustion chamber leak down test insures less than 5% leak down past fresh valve job
    New Viton valve stem seals

If I were you, I'd price all the bits above individually and take the copy points above into a cylinder head workshop and ask how much...

Gonna be an expensive exercise but I'm guessing:

    Cams $1000 approx
    Valves + springs $1500 - Ferrea - http://www.conceptzperformance.com/cart/description.php?II=1441&Car_Type=300&UID=20101228175551
    Stem seals $60
    Postage $100

Total about $2650... + assembly and machine work.

I'd say you'd be looking at a $4k set of heads or there abouts :) (thats including the cams u have already tho) add another $750ish to that for new lifters if u wanna go that way too... :/

Get a new set of Hyd lifters as the old one's will fail with the heavy valve springs, also a new set of H/D VTC springs.

once again why does everyone hate cometic gaskets? One of the best gaskets on the market, and either a lot of people aren't installing them correctly, or having the surfaces finished to the correct specs (50RA from memory)

    Thanks for the info guys.
I was expecting a bill of about 5k. A lot of dosh but well worth it in the long run.
I was thinking like you Jamie, get all the bits and get a shop to do the rest.
    Hence "what should I get"?

well i know it will cost you around $1600-$1800 for a full service on both heads, that includes cleaning, decking, new seals and re assembly. Although come to think of it that was for solid buckets that had to be re shimmed, so perhaps it may be cheaper. i usually just buy all the parts i want and get them to fit them as it doesn't cost any more when the heads are already disassembled. Speak to AK cylinder heads in kelmscott. He is probably the best in perth.

Check out Import Parts Pro whilst the exchange rate is good. Lots of experience with the VG30 and highly recommended by the ttnet crew.

You can do that but if you have a problem you have no leg to stand on they will blame the parts you supplied and the other side will blame the installer safest bet would be either z1 or coz heads complete.
A shop here wouldn't do a thorough job as z1 or coz would do as they do zed heads all the time they know where and more importantly how much to shave.

i suppose you would know how thorough a job a cylinder head shop would do over here due to your extensive experience in dealing with all of them......

Why have you dealt with all of them yourself. no one hear in Australia has ported as many 300zx heads as they would have. i don't have to have experience to know that. and there for they would do a more thorough job shorly. who would you send your heads to a guy who has done a couple of 300zx heads before or lets say z1 that have done or over seen thousands of heads and export them internationally through out the world. even if it worked out to be 1k more. it will cost you triple that if you had to pull them out to do them again because "Joe Blow head services" ****ed up. im having this problem right now buddy thats my experience i know how costly it can be sending your car to the wrong ppl.

apparently the cometic head gaskets don't seal the multi layers around the pistons which has been the cause of many failures before and seems like its the case with mine also, unlike some other brands that do.
