Hey all, I've noticed that my Z has been howling a lot during acceleration, no matter how hard. I've checked all the air intake pipes for cracks and made sure they are all fitted securely, no problems there. Assuming that the air filter itself may need a thorough clean. I've got an Apexi pod fitted, what is the best way to clean one? Cheers
wouldn't it be best to contact Apexi... http://www.apexi.com/ If you car is a TT are you sure its not one of the turbos? I guess you need to try and listen where the noise is coming from.
apexi is a wash in fuel then lightly oil - like any other reusable filter howling sound is hard to define - howling sounds like an obstruction - maybe is the filter clogged up on underside from soot/ tar/ mud etc jamie
Aren't they dry filters????? http://apexi-usa.com/shop/index.php/90-96-nissan-300zx-power-intake.html says.... The Power Intake incorporates a newly developed material (layer filter of dry density fibers) which improves the element density. This allows maximum protection from foreign materials entering the engine. Compared with past model, the Power Intake has also succeeded in decreasing its ventilation resistance by about 10% (pressure loss) for maximum performance and protection. The Power Intake is dry-type filter and is trouble free. Some of the problems associated with wet type cleaners, such as oil sticking to the air flow meter, are a thing of the past. However I can't see anything about cleaning them... I'd say a light tap and vacuum... OR email them for a definitive answer... N/B if you oil it and it's not designed to be used that way you could mess it up or worse damage the car.... hey, but it's your money do what you want.
Blow some compressed air through it... and if it's really dirty mild detergent perhaps. I'm going to just use compressed air on mine and chance a wash when it's filthy, if I kill it buy a new one.
Yeah, Apexi Power intake is dry, generally speaking don't need serious cleaning other than a tap and vacuum.
At a guess I would say if you are hearing something that sounds like "howling" during acceleration it has nothing to do with your intake and is the cooling fan for the engine. If you can rev the engine with no load and still get the same noise then I'd be looking to make sure you have a good stock/OEM fan clutch and not a after market or seized OEM one.
