    Hi guys,

I just know you're all going to be laughing  and saying to each other; "he doesn't know what it is... :D", but I don't mind, cos it's weird as hell and I just need to know or it's gonna drive me crazy!

Please, can someone tell me what is this thing for? It's a black steel bar, mounted between rubber, in a bracket behind the trim in the hatch (opposite side to rear wiper motor). Seems to have no purpose other than (perhaps) dampener or weight for the hatch.

Yes, it is a hatch counterweight.
It is there to make closing the hatch easier.
Those with weak gas struts probably wouldn't need it.

I suspect it is more to balance out the weight of the wiper motor so the hatch does not twist and put more load on the hinges during opening and closing.

infact those with weak struts can remove and store to get a little more life out of their struts instead of having the hatch fall on their head....... Yep been there as well, and I was cheap enough do this I did however have one of those wonderfull Veilside 2 piece f/glass trolley handles on my hatch. Having removed that I am putting the weight back in so I dont smash my chin when I open my hatch as well as helping it close, I dont think my struts were as bad as I thought

Well my struts weren't shagged but removed that thing for weight saving. Be careful after removal as the hatch will smack you in the face with great force if struts are still good.

As for the counter weight, it's a lump of metal, add that to your deleted items box for the zed and take the whole lot to the scrappers for what ever it's worth in scrap value.
