Thanks Odin. I have tried starting it with my foot flat to the floor, still no good. Plus, I gave the IACV a clean when I had the plenum off. I will test it with a 12v battery to be sure, but car should still be able to start even if it is stuck (I've had it stick before). Base idle is around 900rpm. Car was running fine one day, not starting the next
Update 2: Tried starting with AEROSTART but made no difference what so ever. Checked the first four cylinders for spark & they checked fine. I don't see the point in checking 5 & 6 as car would still start on 4 (tell me if I'm wrong). There is also fuel, as by the time I checked plugs 3 & 4 they were visibly wet. Still in the process of finding a suitable fuel pressure gauge. One thing I have noticed is when the car is first attempted to be started after being left for a day or so, for a split second it sounds like it is almost going to start. Then any attempt afterward it just turns over with no desire to fire.
Sounds like it is flooding with fuel. Silly question but are the fuel lines on the right way? If no fire with aerostart, there can't be a strong enough spark. If the plugs are visibly wet, they are most likely fouled.
Yes - not neccessarily an oversupply of fuel but more likely an under-supply of spark - or spark is not strong enough to fire fuel-fouled plugs. Keep it simple ... fuel and spark... It could just be fouled plugs at this stage from all the cranking without starting. Now you have the initial causes fixed, the fouled plugs become the next reason for not starting. I'd grab a set of cheap coppers to try again. The front 4 will 'carry' the rear 2 when starting. It'll run like crap until the rears clear up in a few minutes with a couple good revs.
Thanks for all the ideas guys. I replaced the spark plugs with new (cheap copper) plugs when I replaced the lower injector o-rings for a 2nd time, Mark. As I mentioned earlier, plugs 3 & 4 were wet when I got around to pulling them out & checking them for spark (but that was after cranking the engine a few times checking both cylinder 1 & 2 for spark). Here is a pic of the engine currently, in case it is something visibly obvious I have over looked. Currently don't have the intake pipes on (due to spraying aerostart into plenum). Also don't have any intake clamps done up tight at this stage of trouble shooting.
Had the exact same problem on mine, has your power transistor unit ever been repalaced?? try this: http://www.importpartspro.com/ni30potrunpt.html
if your PTU was broken or not supplying spark to any of your cycls, you wouldn't get any spark when testing for spark using the plug out / visible spark method would you? That's how you tested your first 4 cyls for spark right?
Checked the cam timing? easy to do with your car Fuel lines look correct from what I can see, if it is flooding adding more fuel (aerostart) wont help it will only make it worse. Try disabling the fuel pump (I did say clamp the fuel lines but not possible/good with braided lines) then crank it over & try a shot of aerostart, if it runs this rules out the spark side of things. You have checked all the earth wires are on for the harness aye? a couple over the back sometimes overlooked. Positive you have the correct tune for your set up? a dual intake chip in a single intake car would flood it big time - mind you it has been driven aye?
Cam sprockets line up the the indicators on the backing plate. The earth points on the fuel rail & plenum are in place at the back of the motor. The car was running fine for a week or so with the larger injectors and tune.
Compression Have you done a compression test lately. Fuel, Spark and Compression are the three main things needed. Low compression can cause these symptoms. Andy
Only that I've been flat out at work & haven't had a chance to give the poor ol' Z any attention EDIT: Oh, I did trying starting it one morning a few days back. Didn't change anything, just thought I'd try my luck... & she actually started. Very very rough, didn't sound like all cylinders were firing. Run for a few seconds, then stalled again. Couldn't get it to fire again after that. EDIT 2: Oh oh & to rub salt in the wound, my rego turned up in the mail for it yesterday :bash:
Ouch But hey on the the bright side if you close the bonnet & push her outside she will still look fricken awesome! Almost sounds like the fuel pressure reg or return line is blocked. Buy a gauge & chuck the bugger on there just so we know what the fuel pressure is doing.
Update: Without touching/changing a thing, just attempted to start the Z (hasn't been touched in days). The car started, but soon conked out. I tried it another two times & both times the car started, but again very very lumpy and soon stalled. One thing I did notice was that the AUX fan was coming on every time. Clue perhaps? Glenn, I ordered a fuel pressure gauge and T piece yesterday
Aux fan coming on is a clue. Check for error codes. Also check that the CTS itself and the connector is OK. I have the resistance specs on my website (click sig pic.)
