Of course I am out to make money, that's what a business does. Why would I tell another workshop how to do their job, I might aswell just throw money away if that is going to happen. It's not a dog act at all, it is purely common sense.

buddy, you are getting your back hairs up for all the wrong reasons. Put it into perspective by making it personal to you-

You say that money grows on trees for you, due to the amount of hours that you work. If your boss brough a new guy over to you and told you "tell him how to do your job, because we want to give him half of your hours a week", how would you feel about it?

Working on 300ZX's is something that Eric/drz400y does for a living, it is his "money tree", and from all reports coming from members on this forum, the value for money you get is outstanding. He is an active part of the community, from offering free advice to those in need, to running his wife's car down the track with others....... but, you should understand that "free advice" shouldn't extend to educating others with the ability to work on a vehicle that has taken him years to specialise in (ie- the rebuilding of your motor).

No offence to your mechanic, or to yourself. If he can get 2000HP out of a V8, then all good for him, it is something that he obviously specialises in, through years of working on such. He has clearly said to you that he is a bit stumped by the VG30DE motor, and you should take that honesty on board, and decide if you are going to let your money and motor be the "learning experiece" for him.

Im an electrician, but if a close friend asked me to install a fully automated C-bus system in his house, I would also tell him that such an installation is not my speciality. Sure, it is a sub-section of my trade, but a very expensive one (for the customer) for me to learn.

The principles with modifying a VG should be the same that you mechanic applies to modifying his mucel/muscle (took me a while to work out what that word was) cars. However, tolerences when porting, required balancing, necessity for aftermarket parts vs OEM are all something that he will not be familiar with. You will be able to read up on such, its all on this site somewhere, often with 5 contradictory options from others. Even with free labour, it could still cost you more in the long run and very quickly go pear shaped for you.

Suggestions? ask your mechanic friend 1 simple question, "Are you confident to rebuild my motor?" If he is a friend, he will answer you honestly, without taking any offence. If the answer is "no", then withdraw your engine from his workshop.
