Future 300ZX owner, got some questions.

BodenM No ZX just yet :(

    Hi all,
I'm Boden, and I'm from the suburbs of Brisbane (QLD Represent :D). I'm looking at getting a 300ZX (haven't decided which variant yet though), because my parents want me to get a car ASAP once I finish my learners, so Mum doesn't have to fight over her Tiida with me :)rolleyes:). I've got a few questions that Google-fu and forum lurking haven't answered, so I thought I'd ask you guys.
    1. Has anyone from QLD had issues getting an exemption for the 2+2 TT? If my figures are right, the 2+2's power/weight ratio is a smidge under 125kW/t (max limit for moderately powered vehicle exemption)
    2. If I can't get an exemption, if I removed the TT sticker from the upper brake light panel, and from the plenum cover (or just remove the cover entirely), are there any immediate dead giveaways as to the car's turbo status?
    3. For people doing HID conversions, are you using the stock projectors and reflectors for low/high beam (respectively)?
    4. Would the 350Z Nismo wheels (2007/8 ones) fit under the ZX's guards without modifying them? The fronts are 18"x9" at the front, and 19"x10" at the back, both with a +30 offset.

  2. Anti

    Anti 14.7 x 14.7 = 44.1

    hi

    it doesn't qualify, sorry.
    Nope, go for it.
    Yup.
Nope, guard work and camber control will be required.

Do more thread searching on driving a TT on your Ps, HID lighting and wheel offsets as there are more threads on those topics than I have strands of patience to go into further detail.

    1. Getting an exemption isn't overly hard, nor is it overly easy. From what I have gathered you need to already own the car before being able to apply for an exemption.

    2. If you remove the turbo stickers, a smart cop will be able to pick the intercoolers in the front bar, blow off valves (even stock recircs are audible) and the turbos in the engine bay if they know what they are looking for. Chances are most won't know what they're looking at. But you may just run in to a cop that used to own one. Either way it's not worth the risk since you won't be insured and will get fisted, hard, if you crash. Just do the time like every other p plater has and buy an na. Buy a good one that's been serviced and taken care of and you shouldn't have to spend too much on upkeep until you're ready to buy a tt.

    3. I've got 35w hid's and 55w hid's in my low and high beams respectively. Plugged straight in to the stock lights and they work great. Do the pexmod so the lows stay on with the highs and they are amazing out on the highway.

4.I don't believe these wheels will take too much to fit, but another member can confirm that. There are people on here running them.

I'm a P-plater with an NA ,its still plenty of power to have fun.
After owning it for 6 months i've driven past plenty of cops and haven't been pulled over once. But all it takes is 1 smart cop to recognize the turbo piping in the 3 years on your P's.

Up to you which model you get but you will need to have a clever reason to need to drive a twin turbo sports coupe on your p's :p

If you really want a turbo car on your P's , just get a r32 gtst.

If you really like the zeds, get an NA and learn to drive; then get the TT.

Thanks for the help guys. I realised I should be able to get a personal circumstances exemption, because dad's 4WD is an auto (and he uses it to get to work), and Mum uses the Tiida to get to work, so the only car available to get to school/uni would be the 300ZX. Main reason I want the TT is for autocross because it has HICAS + TT power. As far as I know, there's no way to put HICAS in the N/A ZX.

You wont get an exemption based on that.

Also the turbo outlet pipes are visible... Doesn't take a genius to see that the intake system doesn't run from filter to TB.

3.0 V6 in manual transmission is still going to ge fun to drive even without boost.

You must be the only person in the worlds who wants HICAS haha.

You mean the 300zx you bought knowing you're not allowed to drive it? Do let us know how that turns out...

  11. Gumby

    Gumby Legit.

Here in w.a theres no special speed limits or power restrictions, move over here if you want a tt :D

Otherwise deal with it and buy a na manual then do a conversion or save up for a tt for when youroff your p's

Itd be interesting to see some actual figures on how efficient the power to weight ratio laws are working

If I'm correct you need to have auto levelling kit for your HIDs along with headlight washers... I work as a parts analyst for ford and know that it's a legal requirement, and if the car I'm working on only has halogen lights then I'm always removing all this kit.

I know this they easily purchased but if that's the law for new cars then I would imagine that's the law for old cars..

Im not on my p's and have an NA.... Plenty of power vs other cars on the road... The issue with tt is it's an extra pain to worry about and service... It's enough work on an NA, and if you arnt mechanically minded your in for some money spending!!!
This is the reason I went NA, less issues, but still have the looks I wanted

    Serious???

Mate, its great that you want a Zed. But breaking the law (weather it sucks or not) is not the best way to start your driving career....

Suck it up, and do what every other P plater in the country (except W.A) has had to do, and buy an NA. They're not a bad car, and fun to drive. I had one for 8 years and still regret selling it....

What is it with you youngfolk wanting to jump the gun early and go straight into a high powered sports car?? Is that you like police attention?? Or that you think you're such an awesome driver???.....

You don't want hicas. Unless you are going to spend hundreds of dollars refurbishing all the 20yo. hydraulic components. And even then you still don't want hicas.

Wouldn't an na with the better rear end and extra low down power be more suited to autocross anyway??

Whenever I hear of a young driver wanting to own a 300ZX Twin Turbo, I think of this:
    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=3250825
The petrol station is no longer there, I think even the building got taken down ...

A 300ZX Twin Turbo is not a learners car - they are unforgiving, especially with worn suspension bushes. Its not to say that the owner is not a good driver or not, but they have so much more power than your average car, and all the setup is for precise driving, unlike a sedan which you can normally just throw at corners and it makes lots of noise but stays on the road and makes you look like a knob.

Don't buy a TT, you've just started driving and haven't even been on the road without your parents yet. Chances are you'll kill yourself if you do get a TT.

I've never been pulled over in my NA and I'm on my P's, they have plenty of power. If you really wanted you could spend the money and get a bit of work done to an NA for power gain, but apart from bolt on mods it isn't really worth it.

a 2+2 manual TT would be closer to 145kw/tonne, so no, you wont ever get an exemption for it. I honestly don't understand what kids today are thinking, "i'm on my L's and i'm a mad driver, i'll go get a 300HP twin turbo car and all the girls at my school will get wet".....guess what, you have f*ck all chance of getting an exemption. Get an NA, you'd be more than suprised at an NA's ability to put you into a wall when pushed. A Few Select Mods and NA's can move pretty well for what they are.

I can see where all you guys are coming from with the N/A vs. TT thing. I looked up the performance stats on the N/A and TT, there actually isn't that much in performance gap either. I probably would end up getting a N/A even if I wanted the TT, as I haven't seen a single TT for sale that was a model after 1994 (driver/passenger side airbags made standard) and was 2+2 anyway. In terms of actual modifications, I'd probably fit some decent suspension that doesn't lower the car heaps (my driveway is a steep slope with a hump at the top, and I don't like the flush/hellaflush look, no offence to those who like it) and maybe a pop charger, along with the 350Z Nismo/Rays wheels (the ones that are gunmetal-colored, and are very similar in design and identical in size to the 350Z Track V2 wheels) with some nice sticky rubber on there. Regarding the HICAS though, how feasible would it be to even attempt to add HICAS or Super HICAS to the N/A? If it was feasible, I'm sure other would be people happy to trade their HICAS rear end for a N/A rear end. The only thing is that the N/A has a nicer diff ratio, and I'd lose that by putting in HICAS, unless there is a way to have the best of both worlds (HICAS and N/A diff)

P.S: got my eye on a '95 N/A 2+2 Aus-spec in Arctic White, it's mint from what I can see in the photos, with no obvious gaps in the panel work to suggest crash damage. It's got the factory pedestal spoiler too, and the interior is clean as.
