At this point in time we are getting some bits and pieces made up that will negate the need to remove the plenum chamber of a VG30DE/VG30DETT to undertake an under plenum coolant hose bypass. I was just wondering if there would be any interest in this sort of thing. If so, just leave a reply here.

Don't get too excited guys >>>

    >>> wait for more information as per my earlier request.

The false ecomony in NOT removing plenum [a mere 2-hour job in itself] may be failure to replace 2 or 3 small cooling hoses at rear of engine - only just accessible with plenum off.

If those hoses are not replaced [on a TT] you're wasting money & asking for trouble.

Also, with plenum off you can replace all PCV hoses, reseal exhaust cam covers and fix a plethora of minor problems ~ this is what takes the time, ask MikeZ & PexZed.

    I agree totally Rob

Bypassing the under plenum hoses without pulling the plenum may be a quick fix to getting your car back on the road after a burst under plenum hose. Materials involved would be a couple of metres of 8mm hose (either heater hose or even non EFI hose) and some 90° connectors.

Seriously, a plenum pull is done for so many reasons. Some of the heater and turbo cooling hoses are located at the rear of the engine bay and can only be accessed with the plenum off. There's also a plethora of other jobs to complete such as PCV hoses and valves, injector o-rings, cam covers, EGR hoses, IACV, fuel hoses (!!!!!) etc etc.

Check out this thread of when I did mine.

So really, the under plenum hoses are just one small stage of a plenum pull. It's not as scary as it sounds and there are now a number of home mechanics in QLD who have successfully undertaken this.

    Bypass hoses.

The hoses at the rear of the motor are accessible with the plenum on. Not the easiest of tasks but it can (and has) been done fairly easily.

The only one that isn't accessible is the one that runs above the bellhousing but that one isn't even accessible with the plenum completely removed, so effectively all bypass hoses are taken care of.

I posted this in the interest of the budget conscious people who just want the coolant hoses replaced. Of course, if the plenum is pulled off it's a wise move to do the other things under there. This is just a cheaper alternative to upkeep the cooling system (especially now that summer is coming).

Thanks for taking the time to be of assistance to members.

I, for one, will be interested to hear your advice on this mod (even though I have already removed the offending hoses).
Perhaps this will be suitable for inclusion in the Tech Section.
