hey i bought a 300zx not too long ago and it was vibrating so i took it into nissan and was told that the center hanger bearing is stuffed and so are the uni joints. the drive shaft has been balanced prior to me buying it. i have emailed so many sites that sell 300zx premade 1 piece driveshafts but they never email me back so i am not parting with that much money that i will probably not c again! 1 thing that i have put into consideration is to just replace the center hanger bearing and if its possible to get a new universal joint and then rebalance the drive shaft. so i am asking u fellow 300zx fanatics to decide what i should do?
grab one from Z1, theyre pretty reputable and there arent any reports of em failing. I'm gonna get mine from them too next month
Common problem with our Zeds. Stands to reason that rubbers and bearings are due to be replaced on cars pushing 20 years now. Relatively easy fix. You can usually pick up a main center bearing for about $70-130AUD locally. The other option as you've already figured out is biting the bullet and just going for a one piece. I went this route and picked up a one piece Aluminium shaft for about $350USD from memory. All comes down to how much you want to spend. MoulaZX
Center bearing and Unis are easy to fix.. Check the rear Tyres as well..I had my Kumos checked when they are warm..all good. However, I had them ckecked when they were cold as well.. surprise..one tyre had a flat spot..nearly 3mm when cold.
i probably should have mentioned i live in new zealand. anyways z1 was the first supplier i emailed but its been 2 months now and they still havn't gotten back 2 me! i am willing to spend $800 NZD max for a 1 piece driveshaft. i have replaced all four tires and had them balanced so that won't b a problem. thanks for the advice guys
If Z1 haven't replied, give Coz at Concept Zed Performance(in Arizona, USA) a call. He'll look after you without any bullshit.:zlove:
Another option try going to one of your local Engineering workshops and ask if they can make you one up. Phone book and phone calls save time and money
I just put in a Z1 aluminium one peice tailshaft, literally a million times better than the ol heavy two peice & zero vibration. Can't go wrong for $380 US
i know! i want a premade 1 piece driveshaft lol...i have called some engineering workshops here in NZ but they said they charge $61 per hour!@!@!@ so i threw away that idea. thanks chili ill give them a call hope it doesn't cost too much
These are going really well in the UK, the drive train feels so much smoother even on zeds that had good center bearings previously. Know its not too convienent for you guys but possible you find a fabricator locally. Taken from www.300zx.co.uk site Due to increased enquires, we are now making available the one piece propshafts we normally fit when undertaking manual conversions. So we can supply a newly fabricated single piece propshaft for both the TT and N/A auto or manual for ?225 + vat this with your prop in part exchange. The new units are fully balanced and are super smooth in operation, no more centre bearing issues to worry about and at a cost similar if not less expensive than having a new bearing fitted. All of the work is done by our own fabricator so no waiting for delivery from the US and no import duty, and fully warranted. Jeff TT Ok here is an update for those who asked for weight spec of our one piece propshafts Swb tt manual standard weight = 15.88 Kilo Swb one peice weight = 9.52 Kilo Weight save = 6.36 kilo Lwb original units are around 12% heavier so the weight saving is around 7.1 kilo`s Here is a swb shown in pic 1, pic 2 shows a new unit along side an original two piece unit, pics 3 and 4 shows the quality of the tube weld onto original spec flanges. So as a reminder again they are ?225 + vat which works out less than fitting a Genuine Nissan centre support bearing and are lighter too. Jeff TT
Just noticed the picture, old stuff but are you aware the first piece of your OEM shaft is not phased correctly !? I mean the yokes should be aligned, here they are 90° phased. This is a potential source of vibration if angle is not perfectly 0° on the first piece (typically when trans mount sags)
Mate this post is 5 years old and his Last Activity: 07-10-2012 02:06 PM So he hasn't even been back on here for nearly 4 years
Learning doesn't hurt and may help somebody else as it helped me. This OEM shaft is not phased correctly, despite of that still compared with one-piece shaft on the picture ...
