Due to the recent interior post, i have been inspired. I have my next car sourced, and its my secret where from, but I'll be dealing with 2 seats instead of 4, So I am feeling up for a challange. While the boys are outside doin engine swaps, I want to put together an interior. My material of choice is suede, 2 toned as leather is too expensive, too hot i summer and too much maintence. Again colours are my secret So I was wondering, How hard is it to do? given i have some sewing skills from my sweatshop days. Are there an "patterns" out there I could buy to help? Or are there any expert tips you guys could give me in the means of binding, making it stay in place, getting it to stick to the door fabs etc. Or is it just a bad idea? lol
best pattern you can hope for is to tear off the tweed and use trace off that, just remember that more material is better than not enough.
i see thats what i thought would be the case. also what kinda stitching? like double, any particular thread thickness?
on my old zed, all i did was rip the old tweed off and then cover the panel with more then enough material, then just trimmed around the inside edge. i just used contact adhesive.... pretty simple really. i wouldnt attempt the sewing stuff like seats if your not confident....
Suede does not stretch much so it's a bit tricky around corners. It also changes color when you touch it depending on which way you brush it. It never looks clean, alwas marks everywhere. I started doing Silver in steel gray suede, but I'm going to rip it out and use something that is a bit darker, does not show where you touched it and is a bit more stretchy. Spray adhesive 3M Super 74 is what I got from my upholsterer neighbor. Spray on both surfaces, wait 20 seconds and attach. Works great.
yeah suede may be a bit tricky on some of the sections *cough*doors*cough* but would look really nice. Theres a few companies that supply the trim kit in suede pre-cut so its obviously do-able, have a look on twinturbo.net theres 2 guys selling them there, & they dont require stitching. They also do the seats in leather, suede or a combo of the 2. Otherwise its as ZedEx said, you just peel off the tweed & trace it onto the back of your material. Heres mine below, tan is velour that I did myself by tracing tweed onto the velour & seats are leatherette kit sold by MaxfromAus that I fitted myself (you buy the pre-stitched skin & replace tweed) Have a bit of a search for retrims as theres been a couple write-ups posted up. cheers, Tim
glad this thread has been started. Reminds me promised myself I'd do mine while I have "time off". I've had a bag of blue micro-suede since the Perth Show-n-shine last year haha. Re the seat trim kits (which I can't afford at the moment but I'll ask the question), does anyone know if they offer change of materials? ie, they clearly have the pattern, but I dont want all leatherette. Just letterette down the sides, but the centres in velour or simular.
im just finishing my interior off now (pics to come soon ). I did all my trim peices in black microsuede ($25 a meter from spotlight). isnt too difficult, follow the guides but its pretty self explanatory really and imo looks HOT AS, mine is black zed, black and red wheels, black leather with red stitching on the seats and black suede trim , all i need to do is install my 1kW RMS of subwoofers and amps sitting in my garage and my zed will be all done
Your zed will never be done. Nothing is ever perfect. If it was, you might as well get rid of it ! (or put in a cocoon for posterity)
now here is brilliant question i forgot to ask.. how many meters am i needing is say colour 1 was the centre of the seats, and other fabrics and colour 2 was the trim? also, I am considering covering the plastics n such will i'm at, has anyone done this before? as the "plactics" are letting o of their vinyl
the guys in the states that sell them (Tuner D is one, cant remember the other guys name) offer them with leather bolsters & suede centres but obviously they're a bit more than the leatherette versions. only thing you've got to be careful with when buying from say spotlight is to check the material is UV resistant, otherwise it'll start fading in the sun. I bought mine from an auto trim supplier to avoid this issue & its no more expensive, plus they can supply the right glue. cheers, tim
which guide did you use? There's heaps of "interior" threads so keen to know which one u used to get the job done.
Hey IceTeazze, I have a bit of a collection of interior retrims and styles, i'll upload piccies in a sec, would be good for you to have a look at so you get some ideas.. -Kirill
Hahaha, Wikipedia: "This picture is a candidate for speedy, nay very speedy deletion" Can't say I like all the interiors I've posted, but just thought i'd give the OP a broad view of different looks that can be achieved. -Kirill
