I've got a motor on a stand here and I cant tell if its a series one motor or a series two is there any markings on the head or block to signify one or the other, and how can you tell if its an auto motor or manual, because I'm under the impression that the cams are different between the two?

    Thanks for any advice

on the heads it will say 48P on the exhaust side towards the front if its series 2
    40P for series 1

    turbos look almost the same.
check the fly wheel, will be the most obvious sign.

Yeah there's no fly wheel, tubos, exhaust manifolds or lower plenum

check the bush that recieves the input shaft of the gearbox at the end of the crank shaft they are diffent sizes for auto and manual I however do not know the sizes hopefully someone else can let you know, I do know they are different as the engine we got from Awgazm earlier had the manual bush in and it has gone onto an auto tranny.

injectors use different colours for series 1 and 2

throttle cover also varies in colour between year i think.

Intake ports and upper plenum are different too - do a search on S1 and S2 injectors there are plenty of pics already on here.

Lower plenum is missing so that's not much good

Check the VVT sprockets. S1 are fixed, S2 are adjustable.

As for if it's a manual or auto, check the cams. They will have a coloured stripe on them, this will tell you if they are manual or auto. I don't know which colours are which, hit up Eric, he will know.

thanks bud, i believe is a series one motor and ive been told its from a manual but im changing the cams anyway, so if thats the only difference in manual and auto there's no need to worry
