I've been researching 300zx's with a view to purchase one in the near future. Then this article appeared in today's newspaper. 300zx Destroyed by Fire
No it's not a common fault, the main article for this is on the forum, the driver was having some issues, which could have ended up being a leaking fuel line onto the exhaust and it wasn't picked up in time. The owner and his girlfriend escaped unharmed. It is something that can happen too any car at anytime .
AND don't park them side by side PS: shame on you for  , I don't think this is anything to smile about unless we are hoping for classic status through rarity
... really? That first photo was from 9/11 and the 2nd one the Z1 Motorsports warehouse fire, neither were the result of a zed actually combusting on its own.
Without maintanence and a sense of smell, such things could happen. However if you like the smell of petrol and feel driving around in a vehicle that has said vapours. Go for gold Apart from that. Rarely are there problems like these. You'd have to be lucky for it to burn. Overheat the engine....now thats a whole new story haha.
It can happen if you run plastic fuel lines from the fuel filter. If you do run braided petrol tube lines check the worm clips for tightness at every service.
The z31 did have problems with fuel leaking onto the exhaust causing a fire. That article would refer to that.
I wonder if for a brief moment his gearbox actually worked in the Zed while it was on fire? might help me with some issues i'm having with my Z. for the record, 'Common Fault' is a major assumption with no credibility. this is the first zed i've heard of catching fire in such a way. and two things come to mind. if a Z does catch on fire: 1. is it because like any other 20+ year old car stock car if the fuel lines havent been replaced since god knows when you are really just 'playing with fire' or 2. if it is a highly modified vehicle such as zeds could be, might this be a factor? I mean, a highly moded drag car is infinitely more likely to catch on fire than any road car because of the higher volume of fuel being pumped and higher than standard operating temps however, it would be a 'common fault' in a z that driving one does tend to have a positive correlation with the driver attaining more speeding tickets. or, owning a Z does tend to incur such common problems as issues with wet carpet due to failure of the Z's heater core. and lets not forget, owning a Z does have a common fault in that driving one at night on low beam can increase the occurance of night blindness in a Z driver due to the fact that on low beam you basically
You've never owned a 240Z have you I had one as my first car and drove it for around 7 years. After that, the smell of fumes and petrol has to be pretty strong before any alarm would register in my head.
a 240Z is Carby though.... You SHOULD be able to smell it.... Fuel injection not so much... unless you're running massive **** off turbos and a massive fuel system.
