okay. so bout 2 weeks ago i did an oil change and i put a 0-40 oil in it. to thin by lots. so when i told eric what i put it in. he told me it was too thin and i got some oil off of him and i changed it, i put about 300 to 400ml to much in the engine. the thin oil was only in the engine for bout 3 or 4 days. abut 3 days after putting the thicker oil in the motor. i began to get an oil leak. it started to drip from the front of the engine. so i thought the problem would be cam seals, because the oil was on the ps pump and the alternator as well. so i strip the front of the engine down today to find that the cam seals are intact and not leaking, but it looks like the oil is coming out of the bolt that holds the intake cam sprocket in. i haven't heard of it coming out of there. can anyone shed some light onto my problem.
How is the o-ring between the inlet cam gear and the little cover held on with 4 bolts? Or is it leaking from the back?
Could be the cam gear itself, happened to me. Unfortunately it's unrepairable and another gear is required.
Seconded Jonno, my money is on requiring a new cam sprocket. Seen this a couple times now. *edit* Preferably one that doesn't have half a finger stuck in it *looks at Jonno* :zlove:
Hawhaw cept you left the remains of your fingers pasted all over the cam belts, pulleys and idlers so hes right!.........LOL!
so are all cam sprockets the same. or are they different ones for the manual and the auto cams. not talking about the adjustable ones. just the standard ones.
Auto & manual are the same. I think I might have a spare one in the garage I'll sell you if you can't locate one closer to home. tassuperkart, WRONG! It ripped my finger off and spat it straight out. No mess to clean up what so ever (which suited me)
I'm in the same boat at the moment. Just had a full timing kit done but while he was at it, the mechanic found the intake cam sprockets leaking all over my shiny new timing belt. He doesn't want me driving it until I can get replacement cam sprockets (I already have this sorted this in a "Wanted" thread) to go in it, says it will wreck the timing belt. It won't be long before I get the new sprockets in but I do need to use the car in the meantime. How bad is it for the timing belt? Can the belt be cleaned up easily or is it porous & soaking up oil?
I would put a new timing belt in when you change the cam gears - its cheap insurance since you have to remove the old belt anyway. . .
But it is a new belt, the cam sprocket leak was only found while fitting it. So if I drive around for a week or two, is that going to do enough damage that I'll need another belt that quickly?
I wouldn't want to risk it to save $50 for another belt..... I've tried taking shortcuts to save a few $$ on the Z - and each time it comes back to bite me in the ass later and I end up having to spend the money anyway lol [TIS]
Depending on the severity of the leak, I wouldn't be concerned. The leaking oil will run down the face of the backing plate & won't even make contact with the belt. This is just my opinion.
