Hi all I am matt, i joined late last year because i was interested in getting a z32 and thought id learn/ read a bit about them, im in brisbane/ toowoomba. I found this and am after a bit of advice and thats why i post this thread. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/nissan-300zx-1991-11979874 So heres my questions: What sort of work will i be looking at doing to a car which has sat for a long time (he says he starts it up at least once a month)? I rang the guy and he told me a few things wrong with it most of which i reckon i can handle. Im not too bad with cars and have fixed my old datsun (720) a fair few times. Im also thinking i will need a mechanic/ z expert to look at it on my behalf (its in melbourne) and am wondering if any of you know anyone who could go to this guys place and thoroughly check it out for me? Its also unregistered and has no roadworthy. At this stage im not sure if the 100k service is done or not. He says its actually got 101 000 kms on it. Im guessing no... Thanks in advance for your help, im looking forward to owning a zed one day soon. Matt19
Possibly glazed pistons if only started and not run under pressure for a while Must do a compression test obviously - Do a revs check for piece of mind to ensure its not under loan etc Make sure engine is cold on start - run for a while then - Check for oil cleaks after running - use butchers paper - focus around turbos etc Big difference between a datsun and a Z32 - try to get a Zder with experience to help - invaluable but you will need someone local to the car If he cannot prove it has the 100,000 service test - then you will need to assume it hasn't Goodluck
Looks like a decent zed, if you replace that horrible front bar. South Morang isn't a massive drive from me, but its a decent one... PM me if you really want a look and no one else can/will.
Thanks for all your advice! Im not too keen on the front bar either but its not the worst ive seen. I'll let yous know what I decide Matt19
If the cars in brisbane, my advice would be to contact a2zed who is on the forums. also can be contacted via http://www.a2zed.com.au . Definitely worth putting the car past Eric, top bloke and has a very keen eye on these cars.
Just realised, my bad ... however if your looking locally and want something unique... like this zed which has a SAW KIT... and best of all is in QLD http://www.aus300zx.com/forum/showthread.php?t=311840
Its in south morang so its kinda more north east i guess. Ill deffinatly pm you when i figure out what im doing though. Currently im still looking in qld cause this would be way easier I would probably prefer a manual but it looks very clean
Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on that yet, there will be moneys invloved of course. Talked to the guy selling it and he told me a few things wrong with it: The heater leaks under the dash (only when its on? Not sure) He has coilovers in it atm but says the ride is ****ed but he has new ohlins to go in it. He also has a spare exhaust (there is only one tailpipe in the photo so not sure whats the go there) Its also unregistered. So im trying to figure out how I can get a compression test done as well as the inspection. Matt19
Comp test will up to the seller, its not a 10 minute job. Heater core needs replacing by the sounds if it, coilvers are nothing, and exhaust isn't a big deal. But that being said, its all work.
Exactly. That being said it does look like a pretty tidy zed, if I was in the market for one I'd take a look.
Yes I agree, so I should be able to talk down the price due to these things. That should help with transport costs too. I will ask the guy and see if he will get a compression test done.
with those issues, unregistered plus distance, i would would seriously be looking at Blue Z's magic machine ... registered, maintained, an excellent vehicle and next door. end price would be hardly different for two very different outcomes.
I agree, that thing looks mint. I have been considering it the last few days, but im really after a manual. At this stage I think my best option is to wait a bit more. Buying interstate is a massive PITA..
It has flappy paddles - thats halfway to a manual Also be careful when bringing it into QLD of the extra cost in getting it complianced if it has not already got a compliance plate and the $$$$ that will come along with fixing it to make it legal
