Can anyone tell me why my brake lights are on all the time?
I did find a funny looking piece of yellow looking plastic on the drivers floor underneath the brake pedal could this be related?

yes, its related andc that stopper being broken is the cause of the problem.

on the brake pedal, there is a switch called the "brake light switch" which is always pressed in by this stopper when your foot is NOT on the brake pedal. when you press the pedal, the stopper moves away from the switch, allowing the switch to activate and turn on your barke lights.

replace stopper and problem will be fixed. disconnect battery to avoid flattening your battery with your lights in the mean time

    Thank you.
Does this have an effect on cruise control as well?

cruise control also has a switch i beleive, so if your cruise has problems, it could well be a similar issue.

I had the same... here is the fix

There are two switches attached to the brake pedal, one for the brake lights and the other for the cruise cancel. Both are in one place.
A plate of alloy or cut up coke tin double sided taped on or however you fix it on will do the trick.
Brake lights out and cruise works...
    good luck
