Hey all, has anyone experienced this? I have a 1990 auto. The car won't start when in neutral. Will only start in park. Would love to hear from anyone who's experienced this and been able to rectify it. Cheers, MyZX
When I used to do road service it was not uncommon to come across cars that would start in neutral but not in park; the cause of this was a failed inhibitor switch. I've not come across cars that would start in park but not in neutral before, but I'm not sure if this is "normal" for Z32 either. If you can find someone with conzult or similar the next step would be to see if your neutral switch is working.
The engine should start in Park or Neutral. The inhibitor switch is actually set & tested in the neutral position. Sounds like it requires adjustment. Look in the Nissan Service Manual in the Automatic Transmission Section.
Bugger I thought I nailed it. My Z 100% wont start in neutral less the brakes are on quite hard. Inhibitor switch like others have mentioned, or brake switch... at a guess. Good luck
The Z32 starting wiring diagrams I'm looking at only show the inhibitor switch that stops the car from starting. As the Staring relay (coil) is powered when key is turned to start position and the inhibitor switch grounds it when either in park or neutral. --- If the brake affects car starting sequence, it could be someone's additional security wiring. -- Clutch, brake pedal switches are mounted as so they are release when touching pedal, not pressed. Pressing harder wouldn't make a difference, unless the switch wasn't adjusted properly. -- Kick/shift-down switch for accelerator is a pressed switch....well on Z31 Automatic, anyway.
