    Hey all
My auto tranny needs replacing and I need to know if they are the same in the TT and N/A ?

No I dont want a manuel (pronounced Manwhell) conversion as I have SAW that has taken two years to utterly destroy a used box with settings that slam it instantly from one gear to another kicking out the rear end up to 3rd, hell good fun but....actually this box was modded already for fast changes when I got it, the saw just made it rip even better.
Anyone with any good advice or even an auto box for sale let me know..
Also I heard long ago, yes it could be bar talk only, that the Z used the same auto tranny as the patrol ? this I very much doubt but I thought i would throw it out there.....:zlove:

Afaik, there is a ratio difference between the two. Other than that there isnt much different. As i highly doubt they upgraded the flex plate size to accomodate the TT vs the lower output NA. Like what they did with the manuals.

And the patrol box story is true. Again, ratio differences.

I know there is a general idea about Patrol gearboxes but for anyone unsure, the Y60 Nissan Patrol GQ (1988-1998, also known as the Ford Maverick until 1994) gearbox is exactly the same as the 300ZX.

    From: http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1

    Patrol automatic gearbox:
    4-speed Automatic
    RE4R03A
4-speed electronic auto with lock-up torque converter and two-mode shift pattern (economy & power).

    Gear Ratios:
    1st: 2.784
    2nd: 1.544
    3rd: 1.000
    4th: 0.694
    Reverse: 2.275

These are exactly the same gear ratios as in the 300ZX auto TT. The NA auto is slightly different with:

    1: 2.785
    2: 1.545
    3: 1.000
    4: 0.694
    Reverse: 2.272

As you can see, nothing worth worrying about. Seeing as you can pick up a GQ gearbox for $200, this is a very good alternative for those who need a rebuild.

So if I can get a patrol box it should just bolt on and plug in yeah ? sounds pretty cheap too, thanks for the time spent to repsond.

Honestly i cant comment from experience. But i have seen the patrol auto box at the wreckers and it does look pretty much the same. In the morning someone from experience will comment, but from what ive read and seen over the years, you should have no problems. Its just a matter or sourcing the correct year/model type box. One that has the power/hold functionality.

It is a cheap alternative, as after talking to my local auto box rebuilders, they said the rebuild parts were marginally cheaper for 4x4 auto gear, compared to zed auto parts. Bands and plates are easily interchanged. Just many dont like trying it, as they get left with the parts should it not work.

Anyways, good luck with your upcoming decision. You may have to swap the valve body over from the trashed box into the new replacement. So you can obtain that crash box feel you're used too. Been a few discussions of late where other members want to try what you have had. Resultant comments from the knowledgeable lot, end up saying you're left with a broken box. haha.

Yeah I could have hooked up a laptop to the SAW and changed the line pressures etc. to make it a bit easier on the modded box but never got around to it as I found sticking it into (D)2 made it work perfectly well with good downchange pressure etc. But it did get hot real quick, actually surprised it lasted two years, but put a large cooler on it helped.
I think I will look for a stock standard box 2nd hand and have it rebuilt and fitted and then play with the settings. I can buy a UAS new upgraded box for $2400 exchange which is pricey but tempting
    Thanks again for your input.

Not a problem, sorry i couldnt get any more technical. We have two auto zeds, but i prefer my manual zeds. Should never have got rid of the first one (manual). haha.

    Good luck.

As the above posts state ...... damn close :D

I have however been told that a 10mm spacer needs to be added to the N/A box to position the stater motor correctly on a TT setup...... The opposite applies when fitting a TT box to a N/A..... apparently.....

This may not be needed if the bellhousings are changed around......

Crispy should pipe in about now ........ ;)

TRUE.... the 4x4 box is the same and fully interchangable with the 300zx.

As a moderator on a 4x4 site there is a wealth of info regarding modifying the 4x4 autos, they are now accepted as being as good if not better than a manual box even in the competition arenas, shift kitted and with a lockup setup fitted sees the auto box a very flexiable tool for the offroaders, at the last event I went to 50% were autos...... the highest finishing manual fitted vehicle came in 7th place, & of the first 5 outright placings 2 had saw kits instaled.......

    food for thought

Isn't the stock Z32 torque converter fairly marginal in a high performance situation? Which can cause overheating and consequentially stuff the trans. Recall seeing a upgrade converter available on an AU website, search 'RE4R03A'?

I've fitted a TT box to an NA - I swapped Flexplate and Torque Convertor over to the TT parts as well, meaning no issues with the Starter. The only other differences are the Tailshaft (smaller output on the NA) and the cooler hardpipes (different pickups on the box)

Same gearbox model range as the VH45 and SAW works.

The Q45-VH45 also uses the same gearbox model of RE4R03A and it to has different gear ratios. And the SAW kit works perfectly well with it. All I had to do was work out new gearbox maps.

Na and TT boxes are very different internally, although each will fit the other engine and work the same, as long as you use the convertor, flex plate and tail shaft to suit the respective boxes. NA also uses a flanged rear uni in place of the TT CV. This means you either need to use the front half of the NA tailshaft, bolted to the rear half of a TT shaft and then get that lot rebalanced or have a custom tailshaft made.

Both the Patrol and Q45 use the same series of box, but neither are bolt in, both requiring bell housings changed and Patrol box needs the extension housing changed.

Well there you go, i learn something knew everyday. Seems Mr Nissan was at it again with optimising the general design for all sorts of vehicles. I really like this forum :zlove: lots of info to be had everywhere.

    Thanks!

Okay thanks everyone for the input, it seems that to use a box from a 4x4 or n/a requires other modifications to bell housings and or tailshafts, etc. etc.
I will just have to sift through it all. I can just throw money at it and buy a jdm upgraded unit for $ 2400 plus $900 swap labour but it doesn't grow on trees as they say.
for the money I am considering hanging on until a suitable wrecking zed comes along and swap over the tranny and have a car for spares too for around the same money...ho hum
