Hey there, I didnt know where to put this post (or rather rant) so im dumping it here I inspected my 3rd zed...this past weekend. Ive been looking at zeds over the past 6-9 months, and only found a few worthy of inspection. Now I dont know much about the working of cars (a little) but my dad seems to know more. We did the usual things, took it for a test drive, and it all sounded sweet. Nothing at all to see wrong. It was a used car dealer -/). Aanyway, I stupidly, with seeing no fault to the car signed a contract on the condition that the inspection went alright (always get my cars inspected) So today I was happy, telling people about my soon to be sexy zx, and I went to uni and then work as usual Came home, turns out the mechanic rang while I wasnt here, and my dad took the call I cant remember the specifics (will post later when I get written report) but approx $2500+ worth of stuff to be done to get a 'fair, but not excellent' zx All mechanics who have done inspections for me have told me to talk myself out of buying one; He also happily told me a story about a guy who had 5 inspections before finding a good one...at $200-250 a pop its not good... So, my question after all this is, is it really worth waiting for an 'excellent' zx, or is it better to take a gamble on a 'fair'? At this stage, Im almost willing to just buy it, and hope it holds out until I have enough to fix it....Advice peoples!!
yeah they would talk you out of it cause most mechanics dont know how to work on them lol so why would they tell you to get a car they wont be able to do business on??? lol....whats your budget..if your so very worried...and you truly want to own a zed.....buy a cheaper zed ....and do it up...spend 10k on a rebuild +4 on wheels and brakes + exhaust and all other small bits and 6 on cosmetics, ie: interior and exterior styling....20-25k done..one mean car and the looks to go with it
i think it depends on the price you are paying as to how good it is, your last 2 lines are the questions you have to ask and answer yourself post some details of the car on here and someone may already know it,or like sedat says buy one from the forum with its history well noted
I can do better then that http://cgi.ebay.com.au/1990-Nissan-...QQihZ015QQcategoryZ102298QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem The mechanic said something about the heads on the gears, an oil leak in the back of the engine... forget what else. the report should come tomorrow
Sounds about right, $2500 to get a 15 year old car in average condition into a reasonably safe and decent car after a purchase. I usually budget for $2000 for the first 2 months after buying a new (old) car. If you find a decent one on the other hand, you may not have to spend $2500 up front, but expect to spend that much every year at least (++). If you don't know whether it is worth waiting for a better one, I'd say you don't know enough, so it is definitely worth waiting for a better one. Mind you, those $2500, if you do it yourself may only be $500. It may also be more or less in another mechanics view. Is it a safety issue, cosmetic etc ? Specifics of the problems ? But seriously, if you don't have $2500 up your sleeve at any time of owning a zed, that car is just going to go doown hill as soon as anything goes wrong.
Buy and hope wont do it on a small budget You must know if the car is good the owner will keep, and it'll see no care or maintenance before they sell. doesnt matter what car you buy. I dont mean to be negative, z are great. But they are old and they are supercars. They pretty much all need work in some way or other. I bought for 8k then spent 7k to ensure it would be safe and reliable. I needed to spend more but ran out. Honestly I think you need to be an enthusiast to own one, able to do some stuff yourself. and have plenty of expendable income. Are you the sort of person who will read the 500pg service manual for fun
Mate - my advice - find a good one !!!!! You are talking seriously $$$ plus "amount of pissed-off-ness" if you buy a Zed that needs work. GET A GOOD CAR !!! Seriously, I paid extra, (paid a lot actually) for the Godfather, but got a 17 yo zed that drives and behaves like a car only a few years old. Pay Up Front - Cost $$$ Yep, PITA - NO !!!! Motor = good, ride = good, electrics = good, cost = nothing unexpected. Not being a clever dick here, but I advise - Buy a Zed in good nick !!! Don't expect to find this overnight, there's a lot of rubbish out there. Cheers, Peter
mine has the oil leak like that No big deal, a bit smoky when stopped with the windows down sometimes but doesnt do anything bad really.
Another thing i remember, he said the warmer it got, as in the longer its been running, the louder it got...as if things loosened up
