Any clue to what this electric gizmo is?

I found this behind the stereo, it has 5 wires by the look of things, 2 going off to the ECU and 2 going somewhere on the drivers side, which I couldn't really trace.

    A twd??

Taking a guess, but maybe a TWD (Temperature Warning Device)?? They wire into the ECU and read the signals coming from the water temp sensor. When the water temp is at 95 degree's and LED will flash. Do you have any LED's on the dash somewhere??

These were built years ago by K-Zed I think. Many zedders installed them, myself included (in my old NA). They were enclosed in a black little box... Was yours in a black box, or just exposed...

Anyway, thats my guess. I could be wrong though...

a black little box. Unlabeled. it looks like the two other wires go to the speedo cluster on the left where the temperature guage is.

    Yep...

A little black unlabelled box. Follow the two wires to the back of the temp gauge, and look for an installed LED. Some people installed the LED on the cluster surround, others went to the effort of actually installing it into the temp gauge. look closely at the gauge and see if you find an LED. Either that, or someone has installed it into one of the factory warning lights in the lower left of the cluster surround.

Yep. That's what it is, I've got an LED on my temp gauge. You know your stuff.
    The idiot who put it in used masking tape as electrical tape ;_;

    Good ol TWD :)

Yeah, they were quite popular. Before everyone had aftermarket temp gauges, or Datascan or ECUTalk in their cars, the TWD was a nifty little device that would warn you if something was wrong. Saved a few people from expensive engine rebuilds. I've actually got a spare TWD in my garage, which I was going to install in my TT. But with ECUTalk now constantly running and showing me a lot more information, I'm not going to bother.

Yeah, I'll leave this one in, I've got an external temp guage anyway, but this could be useful.

It saved the engine in my silver TT a couple of weeks after I put it in

Yes the TWD is worth keeping.
I got mine from OZX320 ? When he was doing that "buy this and proceeds go to Eric" fund raiser.
I eventually installed it, but changed the LED to a flashing version, because it is MUCH more noticeable (for me).

It is my favourite instrument light, but I hate it when it flashes.

So is it set to turn at at 95c?

It's not 1 of mine. Yes, they're adjustable, but you have to do it in conjunction with ecutalk, replacing the cts temporarily with a variable resistor/ trimpot. Can't recall the range of the trimpot off the top if my head, but you adjust it, simulating a coolant temperature rise, which will 've displayed on your ecutalk. When you've reached the desired switching temperature of the TWD led, you adjust the variable resistor on the TWD unit until the led illuminates. Also worth noting is that if the TWD actually works, which is done by turning the ignition to Accessories, which will illuminate the led.

Well that's not good I just noticed my twd light doesn't come on at accessories :(

If you want to test it out the ign in on and bridge the two pins on your CTS plug with a piece of wire. It should flash
