Another successful Toowoomba Zed surgery

Our friendly member Adz_79 just up the road from me in Toowoomba has had some ongoing issues with his Zed with over heating issues, buggered turbo, boost/vacuum leaks all over the place (could only get 5psi boost max, and was due to a buggered turbo), oil leaks from rear main seal and cam covers and basically a very run down engine bay. Along with a nasty vibration while driving.

Basically our general concensus was the engine needs to come out and give it a full freshen up and going over (ala HaylZ spec with the DZS crew).

So the engine came out and we set about stripping the engine and putting new seals, gaskets, hoses, bypasses, bolted new turbos on, re-install injectors that were just serviced, etc... and basically have the engine sitting on the stand all fresh and ready to connect back to the auto box as soon as the torque converter got back from being balanced. (it turns out that it was very off balance and confirmed to us that was the cause of the vibration while driving).

Yesterday was the day we put it all back in and get running!! So i actually remembered to document this one. lol.

Adam and I started work at 9am, had the engine in situ and bolted up by 12pm, and had everything connected and engine running by 3pm. Not to bad an effort for a couple of blokes drinking piss on a Saturday

    The Zed in question...

    4x4 spec without the engine :) ...

The owner in question, Adam (Adz_79) doing the obligatory engine bay pose...

The engine in question, 1 x completely freshened up VG all ready to slide in...

Up goes the body on stands and ready for action...

    And away we go...

Adz, clearly happy with our progress :) ...

Doing up cross member and engine mount bolts, aswell as g/box mounts and drive shaft.

Engine now in situ and bolted up...

Now just connecting up all the lines, hoses, connectors, etc... (the fiddly stuff, lol)...

This beer was drunk :D ...

One VG, all connected and running now. Started first go (when we jumped the battery :))
Bled the coolant lines and had it running for about 45mins testing and monitoring it's vitals and now holding perfect water temps!!! even with A/C on!!! Yay!!!! :D
After fiddling with cylinder No. 4 injector connector, the engine was purring like a kitten and not one noise coming from it, very smooth running and accelleration and no more annoying leaks! Like brand new again! :zlove:

...Now came the fun bit of taking it for a test drive! Also testing the feel of the newly balanced tourque converter and also to up the boost with the new boost valve we installed.
With Adz driving and me PSA with datascan in my lap, we wound the boost up to 12psi and hit the road!
Perfect!! all vitals are exactly where they should be, Temps are perfect, no more vibrations at all - and now Adam has a grin from ear to ear with his newly found power from a healthy engine running 12psi. It was starting to break traction along a straight, dry road in first - so you can imagine how happy he is now. :D

And that was our Saturday. A very successful and even-free operation, and knowing his engine will now last him probably another 10 years!

Hope you's enjoyed the story :zlove:

    Cheers,
    Benny. :)

    Adz_79 I do it in a Zed

Not quite true. This morning I had an issue. Strong smell coming from the engine bay. After inspection, found the injectors were leaking.

After the quickest plenum pull I've done (approx. 20mins) I found the top o-rings on 4 out 6 injectors had split.

I did get these cleaned and tested but unsure if these were changed. After a quick 1hr drive return to retrieve a mates spare set of 4 injectors from an sr20de, I changed over the o-rings, lubed them up and re-installed. Plenum only took 30mins to put back. No more fuel leak, and my issue with the engine breaking down at high revs disappeared. Should see the grin on my face, bigger than the one in the photos.

I've refound my love for the Zed. :zlove:

Thanks for all your help Benny, next weekend off I'll have to come out for a drinking session :)

Only because the last time we worked on my car while drinking, we made alot of mistakes

Plus, you only had 5 beers, I taxed one before I hit the rums :D

Great to hear that was an easy fix mate. I nearly shit myself when you mentioned that!
It's really handy you could use a good set of o-rings from the sr20 injectors aswell. All perfect again.

...You'll now be a bit of competition for MagicMike for quickest Plenum pullerer now i reckon! :D

p.s. i'll take you up on that piss-up too buddy. ...if you can handle another Greenmount session! :D:D[TIS]
