Issue 31. - Know Your Imports300zx = 3/5"a car full of com pro promises that ultimately affected its real world performance and durability""just pray that nothing goes wrong, as they can be expensive to fix"Soarer = 4/5 "real magic-carpet ride"
GTO    = 3/5 "every 80s gimmick into committee designed"
    Supra = 5/5 "sexy silhouette"
RX7    = 5/5 "still highly respected in Japan"
GTR    = 5/5 "arguably best series of japanese supercars ever built"
GTS-T = 4/5 "probably best all round import on offer ... best value for money"
    Silvia = 4/5 "fast, fun, chuckable"Corvette = 3/5 "if you're hearing impaired ... it may just do"
Ford Mustang = 2/5 "if you really must"

Ill say, the way the list should be...

Soarer = 4/5 - reasonably plush, long and heavy, buy if having mid life crisis.GTO = 2/5 - ok looks + AWD, weak tranny, hard to upgradesupra = 3/5 - over rated, heavy, ugly.RX7 = 3/5 - light, needs rotor rebuild every time you look at it.GTR = 4/5 - fast.... for a family car shapeGt-st = 2/5 - again a family car, needs to be kept at high revs to milk the engine, every man and his dog has one.silvia = 1/5 - cheap, nasty, drab interior, drab exterior, slow, a school kids car.Zed = 100/5 - timeless, easy to upgrade, underestimated.

    My synical outlook

HPI makes most of it's money from advertising not mag sales so to keep their big paying advertisers (importers) they praise the cars that they mainly bring into the country for the largest profit. Zeds are the hardest to sell where as the others are relatively easy. Also how can one number be representative of a car when there are many orthoganal factors like handling, performance, style etc. RX7 5/5 is a joke as it has overheating problems that are worse than the Zed and also they suffer from oil surge on a track.I can imagine the writer for this article being a young rice boy who likes the wildest body kit in the world and his first performance upgrade was a BOV that made the meanest pssshhht sound. Wankers.

    Chewy mate, yeah

dont forget the insane amounts of maintenance u need for the RX7, oh and the big costs to buy them anyway.
Btw chewy, whats happening with your engine?

5 weeks and still waiting on my ARP head

studs so I can install the new metal head gasket and then it's bolt all the guff on the outside and work out what can be removed and replaced with braided stainless lines. Also HPC Coatings QLD have had my cam covers for 4 weeks and still haven't coated them cause they keep getting overspray of the non-wettable SDF onto the hyperflex coating. These guys are getting worse each time I send something out there. In the meantime I'm giving everything a final touch up polish as some of the HPC has started to tarnish from sitting around for the last 6 months. Slow process as it usually takes a full day to do a touch polish per turbo and a couple of days for the plenum.I hope to have it done before end of June so I can run it in during winter.

Don't just whinge.. send them an email...

Tell them they're too concerned about one persons opinions rather than doing proper research etc.Ben (the editor) seems ok, so email him with your opinion, and be positive: ben@hot4s.com.auIt's mainly Martin Donnon's views that corrupt the magazine and are showing up in Zoom more these days too. Here's what I emailed them ages ago after another crap Z article....
    ---------------
As a long time reader of HPI, it still amazes me of the amount of
300zx-bashing your magazine does. Your latest issue is case in
point, where you review Sam's black Zed, a beautiful worked
example, but can't help yourselves in the opening paragraphs. This continued ill-informed banter has already alienated many
of what should be some of your major reader base to the point where
many imported 300zx owners simply don't buy your magazine anymore. You report that the Nissan 300zx twin turbo engine is "disappointingly
    fragile"...
give me a break... with 300hp out of the box and with minor simple mods
(filter/exhaust/chip) raising that figure to 400hp on stock internals,
many of which are forged and shot peened by the factory,
the VG30DETT is anything but fragile... in fact if routine maintenance is
adhered to, such as regular oil changes and radiator flushes, the engine
is almost bulletproof and has been proven to run several hundred
thousand kms without a rebuild, even in raised boost form.
Even your comment about the 300zx's brakes is really only appropriate
if you're talking about taking the Zed to the track where brake fade
becomes an issue (in stock form). The 300zx was voted as one of Car & Driver's top 10 cars in the world for
every year it was sold in the US, with many other magazines voting it
number 1 several years running. Here's some quotes from some major car magazines about the 300zx Twin Turbo...
"Dollar for dollar it's the best damn sports car in the world" - Motor Trend
    "The most eye-catching, hair-straightening, curve-loving, systems
balanced sports car since the first 911 and the next Ferrari."
"A wonderfully balanced car, this is a shining accomplishment, a
wonderful everyday GT" - Motor Trend
"Went so fast that I can't even remember driving it." -- Cartalk
"Anyone who doesn't like this car is seriously suspect as an auto
    enthusiast" - Motor Trend
"Nice car, but the engine is overkill." -- Cartalk------------
ResponseThankyou for your email, Paul. I always appreciate intelligent criticism of
the magazine and will take your comments on board.
I would like to explain, however, why the article was written that way.Our opinion on the reliability of the 300ZX doesn't come from thin air. We
are constantly talking to workshops that work on these and other imports and
they consistently complain about working on the Z32 and the many problems
they have had with them. More importantly, we also speak to many Japanese
workshops, where the Z32 has lost popularity for this very reason. The older
JZA70 Supra is more popular than the Z32, simply because it is more
reliable. Indeed, the engine in Sam's car failed catastrophically, which
instigated the rebuild. What I tried to point out in the article is that although there are problems
with the car, it can be an excellent sports car with only a few alterations.
I also pointed out the value for money that the car offers, even taking such
work into account. I can't give a rosy report on a car when I know very well
that they are prone to more problems than most imports of the same age.As for the quotes you have, you'll notice they all come from new car
magazines, so they are scarcely relevant to the reality of owning one of
these cars now, up to 13 years later. The magazines you list also gave
glowing reviews of the 3000GT, which has even more problems than the Z32.
Like most people I was very impressed by the Z32 when it was released, but
my opinion of it now is based on more than just the impressive spec sheet
    and styling.Ben Ellis
