Air fuel ratio leaning out critically when hot

    Hi All,

This question isn't for the faint of heart!

Hooked up Nistune, Wideband sensor, and recorded the data. Initially everything looked ok, close Air fuel ratio to what was expected, 13's , 14's and such, but! Da da DUN!

When the car reaches a higer temp like after 15 mins of driving, all the Air fuel ratios, under low load, all the way through the rpm range, go to 20's and 30's

Meaning it's leaning out something chronic. The more I drove about, those gargantuan ratios kept creeping into higher loads. So for some reason, as the car gets driven over time, fuel is being cut or more air squeezed in or something. Pinging is getting crazy.

Anybody have any idea what could be the cause of this. I've noticed the hotter the outside air temp the quicker the onset.

Faulty temp guage? Something crosswired? (No fault codes on Consult either)

It appears heat related.... If that's a clue to help...?

    Anybody have any ideas? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

    Check for a boost/vacuum leak :)

    Really?

Really, a boost leak will cause that?.. Any place you can recommend to do that?

you mean 30 to 1 AFR ? it wont run at that

in your driveway, get a hold or buy a boost leak tester from caz racing, not expensive at all

    It got up to..

32 was the highest recorded value. Load 8(?) @ 4000 rpm and again at 6400 rpm. It pings madly until I stand on the accelerator, then it goes away. You can watch the tracer go to higher loads and revs and the AFR is still normal there.... But as she heats up... Those high AFR values start eating their way into the higher loads.

Your engine will be hardly able to do any work with values higher than 18:1. What sort of WBO2 sensor are you using? A lot of them need calibrating beofre use.

What you should check is get out on the highway and cruise at 100km/hr and see if the WBO2 signal is bouncing between 14 and 15:1 AFR.

have you got a stock tune in the ecu or has it been remapped ?

as mentioned number one check for boost leaks.

also check your base timing ...

chuck it on conzult and double check everything is sweet.

do you have a boost controller or is this on stock boost?

    Innovate LC-1

Guage operates perfectly, calibrates etc as expected. Initialy when the engine is cool all values are fine. I even wondered if I was even going to see any performance gain when I'm to tweak the values(!). Everything looked spot on. I'm yet to get on the highway.

just a shot in the dark,

If your O2 sensor is after the Catalytic converters, will that interfere with the reading once the cats get hot and start using up oxygen to convert NO to NO2 and CO to CO2?

That might explain the disparity after everything is warm

    WhiteNight Littering and...

Yeah man something funky is going on. Combustion doesnt happen more than about 8-9:1 and less than about 18-20:1.

    Tell us what you find.

On a side note, how much was nistune and the wide 02... im intereted for myself :)

Yes very good pt pex... All the fuel is taken from those cats then it will give funny readings.

    ECU

I've put 3 ECU's in it at various points, all does the same thing. (All ecu's unmodified except for this Nistune one)

    Stock boost, no controller.

Base timing checked yesterday by Ultratune. (I retard it majorly to stop pinging normally)

I'm going to go out and do some more Consult checking a little later.

This may highlight a point, the car was rebuilt by Nissan at Croydon, didn't know this problem existed as I generally do very small trips. But the long journeys on hot days show the ping.

    Made sure

Made sure the Innovate instructions were followed to the letter. Before the cats, after the turbos, in a 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock position. There's some nice spots to mount the device. Mind you, it operates perfectly before say 15 mins, as does my car. Get's hot, trouble and mad pinging begin.

    Nistune prices

Well, I think it's about $600 for the gift pack. $50 for the soldering job on your ECU(Don't do it unless you have the $150 special equipment) $300 for the wideband. $30 for a welder to put in the O2 bung plug. And then you've got to do a fair bit of reading. I'm trying to keep a journal of 'How to do a Nistune jobby for your Z', so others can relive my torment, personally. ;)

Maybe your fuel regulator is stuffed? Fresh fuel in the tank?

Tektrader Z32 Hoe, service me baby

Wide band O2 sensors are only accurate to about 16:1 air fuel ratio. I wouldnt get too concerned that it says 30:1. Its bullshit.

But on the pinging side. Boost leaks is my guess. You must have a big one.

    Fuel

Fuel is good, full tank, 98 octane(always). Have tried Super Octane boost juice (Forget the brand), still does the ping. Happens on any tank of fuel.

    Pinging ever since...

    History Log:
Bought car. Happiness. Went like bullet on steroids.
Engine pipes were clogged with crud. Got hot a lot.
    Took to Nissan Croydon.
They replaced all pipes and redid the motor.
Got car back, slow response, sluggish, rubbish performance, like someone had cut the turbo output in half.
Strange Black Box under passenger seat gone(???)
    Took to Melbourne Perfomance.
Car ran better, but not suicidal like when first bought.
Saw Strange Black Box for sale on EBAY.
Strange Black Box was Greddy Emange Ultimate!!!!
Me furious! Call cops, go to Nissan, demand item back, get axe  . Every single ponse who worked on my car left. No ablity to get back.
    Do some drives, car pings.
Thought it was all a problem with AFR and Greddy was great.
Decided, lets go Nistune this time, modify on the fly.
Appears to now be a Boost Leak, unless someone else can top it. :)

    My guess

I am guessing the Wideband operates between certain values properly, out side that range it becomes ridiculous. So 32's are probably not realistic, but the leaning out is. Nissan Croydon probably forgot to attach a pipe.!
